Chances of a damaged fuel tank?
Hi all,
I recently reversed out of a mates driveway and the thing that stops his electric gates caught the underside of my car.
I had a look myself and saw that I bent one of the chevron brackets that protects the driveshaft, and pinched the right petrol tank protector sheet.
So i sent it to the garage anyway and they confirmed what i'd surveyed which was all grand.
But then they said there's a bit of a dent in the petrol tank itself and they need to have a look inside it (via taking out the backseats) to see if i damaged the transfer pump.
--So i can arm myself with a bit of knowledge before they suggest a new petrol tank to me - does anyone know how the pump sits in the tank i.e. is it on the floor in which case i probably did hit that, or is it "hovering" and it's just the, eh, petrol-sucker-upper that rests on the floor of the tank in which case im fine??
Also, any ideas how much a new tank costs incase they quote me a price?
Cheers.
Edit: i found this diagram on this forum, but cant make much sense of it!

The fuel pump is located at (3). I don't believe it touches the floor of the tank, but I've never looked in there myself so maybe someone else can confirm.
It's not too hard to check your fuel pump for damage. This DIY may help:
