Hey guys, im quite new to this site. Just bhought my RX8 last week, its a red 2004 which has gone about 50000 miles. I took it on highway for a long drive with speed upto 170 km/h. At first it showed oil light, which after a while turned off again, but than after some time CEL came on and stayed on until today.
I was worried and took it to Mazda dealers and they did some checkups and told me that there was something wrong with the catalysator/converter as they said. (which is damn expensive to buy!!!) they also told that you should change spark plugs.
But when i started the engine after this the CEL was off. But im still worried about this, so my question is that whats the first right thing to do? change spark plugs? cause buying a catalysator is veryyyy expansive and i dont think that it would be the first thing to do.
Please help me out guys!!

Change out that Gas cap for sure , something maybe wrong with yours and Sparkplugs and Wires i always change that and all oils possible and filters when ever i buy another car cause there is no telling how the last owner treated it. Change that and see how the car runs/reacts better then as a last resort change the cat.

Well, you're not real clear on what the dealership said the problem actually was. You might ask them if it happens again what the code was that got thrown(you get a code whenever the CEL comes on). Have you checked your oil level? Make sure its OK. The gas cap issue mentioned earlier can cause a CEL if it's slightly loose(vacuum leak).
If it has 50k miles on it and has the original spark plugs, yeah you're going to want to get new ones. In my opinion if your catalytic converter DOES go bad, replace it with aftermarket if mazda won't replace it.

Was your 8 a certified pre-owned from mazda? Do you have any kind of warranty on it?

If the CEL came on while you were driving, it's not the gas cap. You really need to find out the code. Even with the light off, the code will be stored. (Unless the dealer cleared it after not telling you what it was.)

What country are you in? As part of the emission system, the catalytic converter will be guaranteed for longer than 50,000 miles. In the US, it's either 80k or 100k - I forget which.

Thank you sooo much for your answers..i drove my RX8 today aswell, there is no power loss or something, the car drives perfectly. Still no CEL..but im always afraid it will show up again..I checked gas cap when the light came on, but it than didnt go away even when i tighened it more. But as mentioned earlier it came after the oil lamp turned on..but after driving 4-5 min the oil lamp turned off..and than after some time CEL came on. I guess there's maybe some link between motor oil and CEL...i dunno.
I will change the spark plugs, have a new oil filter and oil change, than lets see what happenes. Other than this i really love this car, just hope it doesnt create more problems for me....
Im currently in Norway, there is 3 years warranty, as this is a 2004 model it doesnt have any warranty left.
