Bumping this thread for anyone that has a similar issue. The exact same thing happened to me when I bought my rx8...shady dealer connected two vac lines wrong for the airpump and the ssv, and couldnt figure out why the cel was on, so they taped over it.


Heads up for anyone seeing an eight with a CEL that wont illuminate when the ignition is switched to 'ON', here's what I found on mine. Again, beware if the cel doesn't light up when the key is set to the 'ON' position.





Gauge face removed





black tape conveniently located over where the CEL would be.
