Check engine light
Even though I have kept up with the maintainence schedule, yesterday the check engine light came on. There is nothing noticibly wrong with the car and I am really reluctant to take it to the dealership because they overcharge and are careless. (they dented my car last time for fuel tank recall, they did fix it though) I always avoid dealerships when it comes to any kind of service but this time I may have no choice. I was wondering what is the length of the standard warranty? My rx8 is 2 years old with 32,000 miles.

Standard Warrantty I BELIEVE is 4 years 40k miles... if thats the case you have another 8k of warranty left.
If you know anyone with a scanalyser you could check out what code youre throwing yourself, other than that there is no telling why you have a CEL. Id say take it to the dealer while youre still on warrenty, like last time, if they mess anything up, they should fix it. I always take time stamped pictures of my car at the dealership before it goes into service, just in case a scratch "suddenly appears". Its a pain, but would be worth it if they did dent the car and tried to get out of it.

go to a autozone or some other parts store and have them pull the code. if their scanner won't connect it's too old and needs to be a can compliant scanner. get the code and either look it up on the net or post it here.

Most problems that will cause a CEL are emission related and covered by the longer emission warranty.
I had a CEL at 25K miles that turned out to be the fuel cap. You could check that at any emission check station if you have them in your area and really don't want to go to the dealer.

My CEL has brightly shone for 3 instances and each time the dealer says they've fixed it. Incidently, my car only has 4300 miles and is 3 months old. It's going in again on Friday and if they don't fix it then, I'm heading for another dealer. TRZ750 is right -- it's usually emission-related and as long as it' not blinking you shouldn't have to worry. It's more than likely a fuel cap problem.
I agree -- it's a hassle.

I had a CEL, so far they replaced the purge valve, gas cap, and lastly a hose going to the purge valve that was not on tight.

So I started this thread to try and find an answer to my problem. Well I went to my garage and removed and tightened the gas cap several clicks and that did the trick. I've had this car for over 2 years and I normally only tighten it 1 or 2 clicks and never had a problem, so maybe the seal is going. I am so relieved that it was something minor. I cannot express how much I hate taking my car to the dealership for service. Thanks guys for the advice, you saved me time and money.

it depends on the store if it's older the probably still have an old scanner.
oryas if it keeps throwing the gas cap code, they probably messed up something when the did the gas tank recall. had a similar problem and the dealership wanted $90 for a diagnostic ( while i was under warranty ) i told to to shove their diag up their *** and not to do jack and called my inside person at mazda. after i got my call back that mazda corp had taken care of it i never had a problem again. it did end up being that my dealership were a bunch of lazy f'ers and dropped the tank with everything still hooked up and messed up the return line.
