Guys,

what is the life span for Rx8 coils ?

do we have any info?

I can tell you first hand that the original coils released with the car in the 04 model don't last long. I replaced mine with the updated ones at 8k. So far so good with the updated coils though.

Technically the ignition coils should last the lifetime of the car. Coils have no moving parts and consequently have nothing to wear out. In the hostile environment of the engine bay properly designed coils should have no problems. Apparently the coils used on the RX-8 are prone to failure due, I believe, to inferior quality build. It appears that the insulation breaks down causing the coils to short/ground on the high tension side. There is no way of knowing if or when a coil will fail. Mazda say they have a new and better coil, but I personally cannot verify this and I believe it is early days for any of the new coils to start failing. Time will tell.

My 8 was built 5/2003 and I have 92,000 miles on the original coils.

They are cheap...and appear to fail often before 50K miles.....I just bought a set shipped for $109US........about the same price as new plugs

I'm going to replace mine every 50K, for $100, why the hell not.

Mine failed at 42k miles but I'd bet they were degraded way before then. I noticed a big difference with the new coils. My 8 is an 06/03 build date.

I have 41K miles and still on original coils. At 50k I'll replace them. Only $100 like others said- they're cheap

mine failed at 8k (or around there) as I mentioned above. The car sat for almost a year before I bought it. Although that should have no impact on it. I bought it with the 8k miles on it and the coils were bad when I got it. Dealer replaced them, huge improvement.

Mine new and improved coils are showing the little white spots at about 15k. I suppected them to be bad again because my car died while at a red light last week. I took it in and am currently waiting on my new engine to arrive. Guess it wasn't the coils that caused the engine failure.

Mazda service manual/TSBs (forget exactly which) say that the white spots on the coils are not indicative of coil performance (i.e. you can have a perfectly fine coil with white spots).

I've been through 3 or 4 sets over the last 52k miles.
However, only 3 or 4 of them actually failed completely on their own and I burned 4 of them by just being bone-headed (I had my ignition control jumpered for 12v instead of 5v - they lasted exactly zero seconds; at least they were already old).
So, I've had half of my coils become marginal and the other half failed, more or less.

well, blast from the recent past. Either way, its good reading. Its good to know that even if a coil sneaks by the ol multimeter, it still may be underperforming.

^^ True, though that is pretty rare. Furthermore, if you really press those coils (hot day, drag racing, etc.) they will probably give up on you at a rather inopportune moment.
Most of the time when it seems like the car "loves" those coils, its because they are the trailing which won't be felt by the driver until they actually do fail and kill the idle quality.

its been a week now that my car has a problem with coils a & c and i havent noticed any loss of power or difference.

Will it take longer to make a difference?

so just buy new coils. replace them, be happy, just like me.

now ok, i have the burnt coils symptoms and both DT are saying about the coils/coils circuit, i am convinced that i have to replace them.

dude, but the thing is that the codes that you posted werent valid. at least according to the service manual.

thats why u should've double check b4 u got ur coils.
