Although I changed my plugs, filters, and all fluids recently as I hit 20k miles, I was still wondering why it felt so much stronger. Interesting!

I still haven't rediscovered the 20k switch in the rx8 papers, but it *was* there when the rx8 papers were first released. I'm sure i'll stumble across it again, it's definitely document on older 13b's.

the real effect of it as far as "feeling" goes I don't think has ever been really determined, im pissed that i cant find it again in the diagrams i'll give it another go again, so many manuals to browse and it's only in a diagram it's never actually written about.

Just wondering if you ever did get those pics; I've always been interested to see condition of a renesis in situ. Thanks for all of your informative posts, in any case.

Just finished my first tank of gas (didnt drive much since I was kinda sick for the past 2 days)

170 till the light turns on ---- MUCH better than the old motor IMO. This 170 miles include a lot of "full throttle and stop and go and stop and go and redline and ...". You get the idea. If I do that on the old motor, I probably get 120-130 miles

YaY !

Oil temp hits 105 today, damn traffic from Belt Pkwy

sorry had some personal issues and was delayed so upon return i simply wanted to meet my deadline rather then blog the finishing, the motor is still in my bay, if i run out of work early or have time after work (most likely) ill try to get pics of all 6 facial areas.

Woo, just finished reading this thread. A lot of useful information deep inside that new (and many old) owners should take a look at.

BTW, congrats on your new engine, nycgps. I've passed you two times in Midtown Manhattan before .

After reading this thread, I sent a PM to teknics because I had concerns about buying used RX8s. My budget don't allow me to purchase a new and old mileage RX8, so I am most likely stuck with an 04-05 RX8... I guess I might as well post the PM here.

I have read nycgps' thread about his dead motor, including all the posts about dangers of not using premix. I read your post about the clear difference in the internals of a 13b with and without premix at 40k. It worries me knowing that the chances of me finding an RX8 that has been well taken care of (premix) is slim to none especially in the used car dealer networks.

Knowing that you are a Mazda Tech and have an expertise on rotaries, I would like to know if I am setting myself for a trap if I purchase an 04/05 rx8 with 50k miles without a clear history on its maintenance?

PS: Any other information and advice you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Robert.

Right after I got my car back, I stop by the Mobil station down the road, Told him I want to fill it up with Super + , but WAIT ! let me pour those premix in first ...

So yeah, my new(reman) motor got its premix treatment since the first day I got it

the 5w20, I changed it out after couple hundred miles. 10w40 first I think, then I changed it again to 20w50.

if you want a 04-05 ... hmm, its a hit or miss.

cuz like me, I mean I did all my **** to prevent my motor going kabooooom. but ... guess I either got a bad build to begin with, or I start my premix way too late ( like 30+K miles)

while some people out there, probably use 5w20 all their life, change their oil every 7 K miles or so, never check their oil level, etc. have perfectly fine motor (or its just that they dont know its dying, whatever)

so ... good luck buddy

Yeah, that is pretty much what I thought.

What premix are you using now and how much of it?

This is the problem here, no Mazda stealership knows what to do on a rotary. It's a shame we don't have techs here

Idemitsu, I got it for around hmm 5 bux a quart. its expensive for premix, but I can still handle the cost. I mean Gas cost almost 40 bux per fill up anyway

8 oz per tankful.

I know

These days, Its hard to have a tech that knows more than just replacing parts.

and tech that knows Rotary + a Rotor head himself is even more rare ... precious ...

Yep, that's why i often spend my time helping local mates. Mostly because Mazda Italia keeps replacing engines instead of coils and fuel pumps..
It's a pity!

lmao.

Engine = cost more.

coils/fuel pump = cost less.

and Mazda Italy did not see that ?

oh well

our scheduled maintenance is set up at 20.000km, spark plugs intended over 60.000km or so..
This sucks!
They don't even know that coils and fuel pumps can go bad... we should write a letter complaining to mazda japan because this is why rx8 sales in italy are poor, and why mazda italia isn't selling directly the '09!

Sorry to hear about your loss, but glad everything worked out for the best. I'm at 88,000 miles and wonder when it will fail since I have no idea how it was ran up to the 76,000 miles I bought it at. Hopefully if it does go it does it before 100,000.

Hey tek, you should post those pics of the two motors pre mix and no mix, love to see the difference.
