TX Cooler air for stock intake

I went into the garage with the intention of installing my nitrous kit but I started with this instead after cornholion135 gave me this idea. Using a factory duct from a 2010 GT auto (which is larger in diameter than the VFAD tube) and a tube from autozone that was given to me by another local member form an old car I made this

If you don't like it be nice, I'm not looking for approval.

With the cloth part of the factory tube removed by drilling out the rivets the autozone tube fits in perfect. It's so tight I had to use a screwdriver to get it in . All in all I am happy but I need to get a proper piece of mesh to cover the inlet and I won't be driving the 8 in any heavy rain from now on. I will get some mesh and clean up the way it is secured but now I wanna see if my intake temps drop any.

Here is a comparison of the Auto tube I used versus and R3's VFAD.

Nice mod. I don't know what the hell Mazda was thinking with the VFAD fail and putting a 4 port auto that can't smoke tires but needs super for some reason? ahha oops starting to rant. So the part came from a salvage 2010 Rx8 GT auto? Are the series 2 ducts all like that?

first off, I think 9k you're thinking too much about "I NEED COLDER AIR" thing ...

second, you do know why Mazda made VFAD right ? (the flapper door)

It's from a local members 2010 GT Auto, we installed the RB intake in his car. Not sure why the auto's is so much larger in diameter.

If you notice, I have something in the way of where the RB duct would go.

Yeah I was in the mood to rip my car apart, haha. I also ran the lines for the Nitrous.

Meh, I was thinking too much, I had the stuff here and a free Sunday so I figured what the hell. And the VFAD is for sound right? Or something about volumetric efficiency? Something about the air in the intake tract not exceeding a certain speed? I dunno but my VFAD has been gone for years, it has never been an issue.

more like air velocity for different engine speed.

My 8 doesn't have a VFAD, so i dunno what it looks like sitting in an 8. and a funny thing, i did this last year to my 8, ripped of that cloth cause how in the heck was it getting air sitting up high inside behind the bumper. Mine doesn't look as clean as yours though but i ran the tube behind the mesh where the RB Ram Duct would had sat. dropped in a K&N filter and i noticed a nice little pick up in the acceleration. Now Im just set on that Petite S/C, but yeah im one of the broke foke driving around Houston

I logged for a bit coming back from lunch and my intake temps were really low. I don't want to speak too soon but usually my intake temps are much higher. I will have to look for some older logs I have posted with similar ambient temps.

Nope, modified Cobb stage 1. I am working to get close to 12.0. I will have some time this week hopefully to get into Kane's latest software release.

I wasn't logging STFT but LTFT is between -1.72 (lowest) - 2.18 (highest) throughout

Nice to see some numbers associated with this mod. I did something similar with no numbers to back its effectiveness.

my point of view is

its nice to see "maybe" lower intake charge temp. but if it doesn't provide anything else. to me its just totally pointless to go thru all the work.

even more pointless due to the poor location choice of that additional heat exchanger preheating the general area

and no supporting ambient weather data to provide any defining reference, the general temperature conditions have been lower in Texas for the last week or two ....

well, consider he had 2 dead engine + Texas is hot almost all year, its totally understandable I guess.

I still think it has a lot to do with Mazda's early messed up ECU tune.

I will gather all of my logs, some of which show the ambient temps. I am not saying for sure my intake temps are lower due to this or not. I won't know until I compare all of my logs and compare the ambient temps. But I do watch my Intake temp and coolant temp daily on the Good Box so I have a pretty good idea of what the usual difference is between the two.

Yes it has been cooler but it was still over 100 on Saturday during our canyon run according the to factory temp sensor (which is now located where my drivers side oil cooler was.

Edit:

My old Hymee logs do not have Intake temps Some of the logs that do are when ambient temps were 50F or so. I will keep looking.

But check this **** out. This is what happens in traffic in Texas with no air flow

Bump, my IAT's are with 5F of ambient temps on average. Hate it or love it, my IAT's are way down. It was a little scary during this last bout of rain, I had to be very careful.
