So after charging my dead battery, and taking the car for a drive, and shutting it off, the cooling fans came on (with the ignition off and the car in park and locked). I waited 5 minutes with the fans running, got in turned the ignition on, and the fans stopped.

Then I took it for a ride to see if it would happen a 2nd time, and it did. This time the I let the fan run 7 minutes before I got in, turned the ignition to on, and the fans stopped.

Anyone heard of anything like this before? (Car is a 2010 RX-8)

 

I'm in Texas, and there are times it seems like they're not going to shut off. It does make me nervous for some reason, but I figure the fans are doing their job, so I let them be. I'm not an expert, but I think long fan time is okay.

the fans will stay on for a long time if the car is hot... come back in 30 mins and if they're still on then you have an issue

 

the fans are SUPPOSED to run.... at least in given conditions, like when it still needs to be cooled after shutdown.

leave em alone and let it run

 

Yes, as have the 100's of other people who have created posts about this issue every single summer.

 

Missed it by that much...

Series I OM says they'll run up to 10 minutes. I'd expect yours to be the same, but you should find the answer in your manual.

Then you can rag the next person to post about their fans running.

(if you read my earlier "dead battery" post I was fearing that maybe I burned out the fan solenoid - but the whole thing is coincidental with the first 100 degree day this car has ever seen)
