custom hitch

John -
Could you put me on your list of "likely" interested persons. I need a solution ASAP for a tire trailer to move track tires to events, but if I can't find some one local who would be interested in doing this immediately, I'll be in the market for a kit.
Thanks

Hitch is now available
I just got an e-mail from Hitch-web.com that said a hitch is being made by Curt Mfg and it will be $180. They are taking pre-orders now and will be shipping in 3 weeks.

Pros of this hitch:
1. It exists and is obtainable
2. It's tested by the manufacturer, certified by them for 2000lbs trailer/200lbs tongue weight, so no wondering if it's not up to the task.
3. For those averse to cutting the rotor symbol on the fascia, it's not going to mess up your world.
Cons of this hitch:
1. It doesn't go through the rotor symbol, and therefore is (to me) more visible and lower than I'd like.
2. It's not supporting a member of the club who's put some effort into developing a hitch.
So.... I've ordered one for my g/f's RX-8. I don't have an 8 of my own yet, so when that time comes I'll have to choose whether I want the Da'Lan hitch with the less appealing receiver location, or the John Corbitt hitch, if it is available by that time.
Let's see who receives/installs/posts photos first!

Well, damn. The DAY I find someone to make me a custom hitch, a vendor has one. Well, I guess that my christmas present to myself might actually show up in time for halling my son's christmas presents home from the grandparents. Yet another battery powered go-kart. He's 2 and already outgrown the first one I got him.

Unfortunatly, I am a corporate pilot and have not had the days off I thought I was going to. Tomorow, I will be on a 10 day trip. I will be back on the 18th. I will try to have some built by then. Carlos was going to need my car, but Mazda has supplyed him with a tub to race next year. He might be able to use that car as the template. I will keep you posted. My hitch is working great. It pulls a 2000lb trailer with no problem.

For those inclined to roll your own trailer...I found a DIY Miata tire trailer here... http://www.codrus.com/cars/trailer/
using Harborfreght's shell for something like $513 total parts cost.
Lot's of pictures, looks pretty nice... he's done the prototype work already
Here's another, there are likely more out there with half a search...

If you want pictures of a miata trailer, in all forms, tires front, tire rear, tires standing up, tires stacked, go to miata.net, then hit the little red car icon. Go to the autox forum, and you can get all sorts of info. Harbor Freight has those 3 x 4 trailer on sale. Seems I paid about $149 (shipped) when I made my miata trailer, and I used marine grade 3/4 plywood, with the same box as shown before. Even made a container (mounts on the hitch tongue) to hold the 3 gallon gas tank, and has room for a little oscar cooler on top. If I , in a SC miata, can haul this at 80 mph for a hour, I'm sure my 8 can do it better. Nice to take it up to the track, and not mess up the car. Even carry some spares and the helmet, suit, and boots are alway ready, once I plug the hitch into the reciever, hookup the trailer and lights, and GO! Get some odd looks , but it works well .

"We talked to Curt on several issues yesterday... one of which was the RX8.
They had set up several new designs to be built in Wisconsin and assigned them their part numbers - hence the 11472 - then on some of then they shifted the production to the Dalan division in Mass with part number 247472. They are saying 3 weeks from now the units will be ship and fill all of the back orders.
Sorry for the delay and if this is un-acceptable let us know and we can refund you the original price."
I said to keep me informed and let me know when it shipped, and so far I've heard nothing. This week I'll send another "WTF?!?" email.
