customizing stock exhaust???
has anyone done this before...using same muffler and hooks but just increasing the diameter of the pipes from what looks like 1.5 inch to a 3 inch or w/e...does this seem logical? Will it change the sound of the stock exhaust but keep it just as quiet?
i have an extra stock exhaust laying on the side of the house but thought that it would be fun to modify it this summer. that is if it would give minor sound differences and make it look better.
my previous after market exhaust was a bit too loud for my taste, but i did like the sound it made. would wider pipes on the stock exhaust make different sound effects but just a tad quieter?
if i did this id get some fancy looking tips for it too

talking about having a custom mid-pipe made that runs into ya stock muffers? If you are, just buy some universal muffers and run them from mid-pipe. If you custom any part of ya exhaust, I recommend doing the whole nine yards.

Wider diameter piping should make it louder , i dont know if it will be a desired sound though. What pipe diameter are you going to use? 3"? If so , the piping that connects to the resonater and muffler will have to shrink back to its original size and welded together. Sorry i havent tried this but you can always experiment with it , ive been through 8 custom exhausts , with different midpipes and resonaters all custom , also piping like single exit. My favorite was single exit with those "box type" mufflers with magnaflow resonater and cat delete. But it was...very very loud . Oh and why dont you try RB exhaust? Heard that was relatively quiet.

well right now im trying to conserve money so i was just going to do this for a fun experiment and if it worked out well then it would be awesome, but im kind of confused on this part of what u said.
"If so , the piping that connects to the resonater and muffler will have to shrink back to its original size and welded together. Sorry i havent tried this but you can always experiment with it"
so i cant just get wider diameter pipes and weld it to the stock muffler to get the same effect? i don't plan to get a new cat/midpipe it would just be a cat back exhaust. can u dumb down what u said above for me, lol sorry im a noob.

Oh what i meant was the tip/ends of the pipe that connects to the muffler will have to be smaller then 3 inch to fit the muffler since the mufflers diameter is less then 3 inch. I think the stock mufflers piping diameter is 2.5 so the tip of t he pipe would have to shrink to 2.5 inches. Are you planning on doing this yourself? Like welding it yourself , or is a shop going to do this for you? Its easily done making a 3 inch pipe tip into 2.5 , they usually use this tool to shrink it down to appropriate size. If you want you can try something like cat delete with stock resonater and stock muffler. Heres a link on what it sounds like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAEF1MKvJGs. ( 3 inch piping will make it sound different then that)

ahhh alright i got ya, well...i was planning on doing it myself, i have a grandpa that lives next door to me whos been welding and doing DIY projects for years and he has a lot of welding experience. He is always willing to do stuff with me (since his kids are out of state) so i was planning on learning/doing the welding all by myself. ok about the muffler situation, i havn't double checked on the diameter or the stock muffler but would it be possible to jsut stretch the outside wall of the muffler to fit around a 3 inch pipe or would that destroy the structural properties of the muffler (i don't know what the inside of a muffler looks like)? but i understand what you're saying now, well definitely..maybe i could just ask a shop to shrink the ends of my pipes down to stock size.

I really enjoy DIY i myself have been thinking on creating a new muffler. Such as a previouse thread i stated thati wanted to get a G35 muffler and fit it to my 8. I guess it can be done from the word on the street but who knows. its worth a try.

If you just want to make it louder but keep the stock muffler, it's easy. Take a stock muffler and cut it length wise, folding it open. Remove the baffles inside. There should only be 2 of them. Make sure the perforated core tubes are removed as well. This will leave only a single hollow chamber. Weld the seam back up.

^-----no see my problem was that when i had an after market exhaust it was too loud for me, i've decided that i dont need a loud exhaust but i want the look that comes with and aftermarket exhaust, so what they did for that guy in the thread posted above was almost exactly what i want to do, stock exhaust decibel but with a unique sound/look
