dealer told me my seal blew
So I took my car into change the sparkplugs today because my car would stall at idle sometimes, only a few days ago it was really bad. The car stalled out 5 times on the freeway in traffic. After checking the car the7 found that my seal was blown and said I need a new motor. I guess this is cool since I will have a new 60k warrenty, the only thing that scares me now is that it can happen again. How common is this? I've seen othe post of people replaceing their engine three times. Is something wrong? Is this because I have an 04 model? Did Mazda fix this problem already? I'm just freaking out because this car is my baby and I'm going to keep it. Much love for the rotary, I could never get rid of her.

You get the balance of your 60K warranty. Yup its a problem and we don't know if Mazda has fixed it yet. Some people have run 100K miles and had no problems others have not. It's a relatively small group of people (including myself).
My sources have told me there are two problems:
1) the internal water seals are pinched at assembly sometimes and then fail. They think it's an assembly error. Most likely you won't have a problem with this again if that was your engines problem.
2)The side seals on the rotors are chipping. We don't know why right now but it appears there is much more clearance between the side seals and the housing than in past rotaries. They may be to reduce the chance of clashing with the large side intake ports. But that's my speculation.
My advice is run pre-mix and synthetic oil once you're through your breakin period on your new motor. Then when you rebuild it again in the distant future get the housings Cermet coated.

What did the dealer lie about? If you mean the new warranty I would just clarify with him what that means and get it in writing. Maybe he is offering a dealer warranty above and beyond Mazdas
Was it this Seal that blew?

my engine is getting replaced as we speak. the warranty is not extended on the new motor. (more bad news not a new engine its a factory re build) apex seals i have read the dealer said it was the rotor chipping thus not a good seal on a compression stoke. what ever i love the car and i am happy about getting a new motor. What really is cool to see the new engine in the crate and no engine in the car that thing is so tiny and creates so much horse power and torque it is truly amazing to see. My old engine was sitting right next to a 6 cyl out of a mazda 6 unreal how much bigger the six was......keep your chin up buy an extended warranty drive it like it is meant to drive Hard.
