diagnose me

I know there are a million threads on a clicking noise, but none of them seem exactly what i have.

here we go
07 MT with 15k on it.

everything has been fine other than a coolant light issue. took it to the dealer monday for a new coolant box.

filled up with 93 octane and 4oz of protec R. this is the first time i've put 4oz in, and only the second time i've put in premix.

took it for a drive today, the first drive since it's been back from the dealer.

when i got back, i noticed a very rhythmic clicking noise coming from the engine mostly on the driver's side. it's NOT the normal clicking i've heard since mile 1. I repeat, it's NOT a normal clicking. This happens at idle.

NOw, what separates my clicking from others is that it is accompanied by some difficulty starting. when i crank the car, it starts of normal, but hesitates to roll over and sort of squeaks in a sad way before starting.

i think there's also some lack of power, but not much.

i also noticed some black liquid coming out of exhaust.

So, did protec R **** up my car, or did the dealer? thoughts?

update: after burning half a tank of the premixed gas i put in 93 octane shell hoping it would help. so far it hasn't, but i've only driven it back from the gas station and tried to start it again.

i looked at the 4 plugs on the driver's side and pushed them in. they seem to have already been in there good. what else?

i think it may be that. it sounds like arcing, i guess, though i have never heard arcing.

is this something i can fix myself with relative ease?

Check plug wires make sure they are on tight. You can do that. Go ahead.

After those residue I saw inside a Protek-R bottle, I dont think anybody should use it for premix.

Maybe thats just me -_-

anyway, check fuel pressure.

yeah, the protec is purpleish like cough syrup looking, and it leaves a residue on its bottle. i'm not sure about it either.

i'll check the plugs and wires in the morning and report back. kid's asleep now. and though she falls right asleep at wot, the cranking is a bit startling.

follow swoope's advise first. then ...

Try stop using the protek-R, and run a tank of fuel system cleaner like the Redline's S1. see what happens.

what is very likely is that the raccoon i hit last week is causing more problems than i anticipated.

i hit it on the passenger side (no body damage), but it busted the fog light and knocked the undercarraige loose. i dragged it about 1000 yards back to the house. i think this could have loosened the plug wires just enough to now be causing problems after a spirited drive.

either that or "the best mazda mechanic in the world" accidentally knocked it loose when i had him reinstall my front mud guards.

the stock plug wires come loose. it happens..

if you turn your wheel all the way to the left you can reach it. you need to move the rubber flap that sits above the a arm.

if you look at it it will be kinda obvious..
