Likely, you have the upgraded one if you bought your Coils from O'Reillys. Look closely at the picture I've attached and you will see N3H1 1B 100 "B" on the coil that's on the top.

My car occasionally makes the chirping noise on start-up too. Maybe once a week on average, and only ever on a cold start. It used to do it fairly frequently up until one of coils took a dump last year (at around 40k miles). I replaced all the coils with the upgraded ones, plus new wires too, and it immediately went away, but it wasn't long before the chirping came back.

I'd be surprised if it really is to do with the ignition system, because at the moment my car is running all new upgraded model coils and new wires, both fitted July last year, and new plugs, fitted during service in December - and yet it currently still happens occasionally.

04' MT GT. Mine makes the chirp noise everytime I start her up. New BHR coils wires and plugs. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the weak OEM starter. Hot start/cold start makes no difference.

I have looked into the oreily coils, and then purchased a set for myself. I have compared them to the updated coils offered from Mazda and they are the same. Same stamping, serial numbers, the whole deal. the only difference is you only pay $35ish from oreily's.

I was a bit skeptic when I saw the NASCAR packaging. O'Reilly's also offer a Lifetime Warranty for the coils.

Having had both engines in the back of the buggy, neither of which took more than a turn or two to fire up, I'd say he's right, your car shouldn't take that much cranking to start.

Well, I'm betting the longer starts are from two coils testing bad. They didn't even have 2k miles on them. I'm thinking defects. Just been to lazy to get new ones.

How long have you had your car?
What year is it and how many miles are on it?
Have you read through the New Owners Thread, and checked out the simple stuff on your car, yet?
Did you have a compression test done on your motor?

So, the first things to look at, if you didn't read this thread, or understand it fully, is that older RX-8's (04, and earlier 05 cars) came from the factory with a weak starter, and battery. They also came with ignition coils that struggled to last a long life in the hot engine bay.

So, most owners in this thread reported easier starting with a combination of new parts:

Some just needed a new starter.
Others just needed new ignition coils, wires, and plugs.
Others needed a new battery, in combination with one of the above two lines.
And a select few needed all three lines above.

But, none of that is going to help if your engine compression is too low.
So, it might be worth it to look at your car to see which starter you have (there's a thread on how to do that), and go from there.

Good luck.

BC.

I have the original starter with 170,000 miles, it is weak but still doesn't take long to turn over and start.

Hi, thanks for the details. My car is a 2004 and I bought it in 2008 with 33k miles. It has 49k now. I know I changed the alternator, coils, and battery. I did not change the starter or check compression. Maybe, this is the problem. How much does that usually cost? thanks

FL Weird sound video

Here is the video I made when I started my RX8 this morning. It is a weird spinning noise. Any ideas of what this problem may be? thanks

The chirp noise (original thread subject btw) is most likely the air injection pump (it comes on during start-up for a 2 minute run period). You will know for sure when then the CEL comes on for it not running because the bearings finally seized up fully. There is a write up on the forum for installing roller skate wheel bearings in place of the factory non-roller bearings rather than replacing the air pump. This is all that is usually wrong with it.

Not sure how we got off on some other unrelated tangent, typical I guess

Thanks for the info. Some people told me it was a belt, coils and plugs, compression, starter and now the air pump. Wow I am very confuse lol. What do you mean with when the CEL comes? thanks

Chirp on startup is mild detonation. A little bit is normal and safe. If it gets bad it can be a sign of weak ignition system. Chirp when pressing in the clutch is an indication of clutch petal failure. Get that checked out before it leaves you stranded.
