Thanks for the great thread lads, got the drivers door working again using the same spring after a couple of hours, the photos were very helpful for this to show where the spring was located. Only happened to me on Thursday evening and now on Sat I have it fixed!

Glad you found this thread. Imagine how it was for us at the time with limited resources.

I've also had the problem of the driver's door unable to open. With the local agent indicating they had not had one, and would have to break into it, I elected to do it myself. It's not that difficult, and doesn't need resorting to air chisels etc.
I've tried to upload attachments, but gave up on invalid files and exceeding the max. If you want a description of how I did it in a .docx file with explanatory photos, email me at ajfj.martin@gmail.com
Cheers

Driver door wont open
Diy
First painful task is to open the door...., if you have motorized seats unbolt seats from car floor... This is for room to work, once all that is done, unplug the battery let it sit for a few min this is to drain the SRS system, I removed battery completely and touched the pos and neg cables together to complete the circuit and drain the relays.... Do at your own risk
Getting the panel off is a total pain but possible took me about 2+ hrs to get off your really fighting the speaker and try not to mess with the window I did and now have another job to do. Possibly a diy on that later.
There are videos on how to remove the panel on YouTube. Just way harder if door is not open.
Once you get inside you will have to cut a hole to access the switch that pops the door
This is the culprit
You will have to make this size of a hole. If you look you can see the lock and door latch cables just for an idea of were I made the cut sorry for not zooming out
After you will have to find this little latch that pops the door a flat head screw driver will be pointing it out
Make sure the thinner latch is pushed all the way down as it controls the lock mechanism.... The tip of the flat head points to the black latch press down an push down, door should open at this point
Take out the black box once door is open and repair if possible
Take off plastics and get inside wear gloves due to silicon grease being everywhere.
This will probably be your problem if there is a loose spring bouncing around it definitely is simple fix buy some springs at a hardware store and you may have to make the spring work for you... I did took a little longer but it works fine now below is the picture of the spring that broke the picture shows the fixed spring in place didn't bother showing the old broken flimsy piece o #%&$ this will solve your door problems though
This is the spring bend it make the spring work for you 😝😂

so are you still not able to open your door with the panel off? I read you opened it but your saying your climbing over the passenger side which leads me to believe you are unable to open the doors

I was not able to get my panel off completely, as the door is still closed and the front part of the panel will not come free. even with pulling the cable to open the rear door I cant get enough clearance. I was able to get the inner panel open and get my hand on the rod. it moves but the mechanism doesn't open. The latch mechanism on mine is covered and there is play in the cable for the lock. I fought with this thing for hours. How do I get the door to open?

You will probably have to cut away part of the plastic cover. In my case, once that is done, it is surprisingly easy to move the right part and open the door. There are a couple of methods shown in this thread with photos that should assist. Most likely cause is the broken spring. Good luck.

Did anyone here have the unfortunate luck to break the clip where the locking rod to the door latch goes into the lock in the door handle. I have gone through the manual and all I can find it a part number for the lock itself. Is there a Replacement or part Number for the anchoring clip?

2004 Rx8 Door Actuator Spring Broke
Me and my dad managed to pull the inside door panel off with the door closed. This did result in a few broken plastic tabs, but I say that's the cost of a self repair/ Saving $350-450... The hardest part about getting the door off is getting the panel around the speaker we just sort of yanked really hard... Then i took most of the bolts out of the interior black shroud that holds the window mount in place so i could have enough room to cut open the plastic on the actuator, then i just moved the black piece with my finger until pulling on the door handle opened my door... You have to detach the rods from the exterior door (make sure not to break the clips) the one clip was super easy to take off the other we just forced out and it didn't break, though you could use some cordage to tie around the rod go through the hole then tie again to fix the problem... (i thought we broke the clip so i had to come up with a clever way to fix it). The interior handle comes out with just one screw so definitely leave all those cables attached, then there's just like 3 screws to open the actuator itself up. We just bent the old spring and used it... works like a charm. (Did NOT have to take the window out, and we got the main cover off with the door closed.) Ps. if you take the handle cover off the back door handle it allows you to open the doors SLIGHTLY which i think gave us the extra room needed to pull the door cover off and out.... Hope this helps... also sorry i didn't take any pictures most of the stuff is pretty self explanatory other than getting the damn door panel off in the first place...
this video showed me where to cut hope it helps, best of luck... it's not a fun job.... PS door HAS to be opened to take the actuator out to fix it... there are 3 screws around the latch that hold it in place... sorry this is all over the place

just want to say thank you to all the people who had enough common sense to upload their photos and documents onto the forum compared to the hotlinking space cadets that are all pointlessly blank now.
