Engine Cover
Does the engine cover serve any useful purpose? Seems to me that with the need to frequently check oil consumption, it is just in the way.
The only thing I could think of that it might do would be to protect the hood from excessive heat. Do you think the paint on the hood might be damaged if it were removed permanently?
Thanks,

Yeah, it's really just for aesthetics, to make the engine bay cleaner looking.
If you do remove it, please hang on to it! In 10 years, people will be dying to have one . The battery box lids on 2nd gen RX-7's are usually missing due to incompetent previous owners, and they're not cheap new. It's just a shame when someone misplaces/throws out something like that.
Hell, the 2nd gen turbo RX-7 has a top-mounted intercooler that's ALWAYS in the way for a lot of maintenance things. Unfortunately, you can't pitch it . But, you do get REALLY good at removing it over time!

I remember reading that the engine cover "may" also assist with airflow.. don't know for sure..
EDIT:
Did a search and found this:
https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...t=engine+cover
Seems inconclusive if it's for looks or utility.

The Mazdaspeed strut tower brace makes it impossible to keep the cover on. If the Mazda engineers don't need it then I think you should be just fine.

I asked a Mazda Canada rep, and he said it is required for airflow for cooling.
Truth or bullshit, I do not know, but he rather sternly warned me about leaving it off..

It's definately not for cooling, it's right up against the hood..
I'd remove mine, but I'm pretty sure that it is actually a bit functional. It helps to keep the airbox in place, and also to keep the battery cover in place.
I think the engine looks tons better without it tho, I'm always taking mine off. When I get a new air intake, I'll probably keep the cover off...
