Engine Cover Missing? Ramifications?

Engine Cover Missing? Ramifications?
Well I took my 2007 Rx8 to the Dealership today for my 35,000 mile oil change and on my way out they said everything looks great...
but...
Then they asked me if my car had not come with an engine cover at the time of purchase? I said that yes it did and then I went and looked and sure enough it was gone! I was schocked and dont have a clue where it went (stolen or if the stealership guys left it off after one of my routine oil changes)
Anyway, any suggestions on where I go from here? Is it important and does it serve any purpose as far as engine peformance and protection?
Just wondering if I need to try to buy a new one from somewhere or if it's ok that I go without one.
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks

It's mosly cosmetic, but there are those who believe it has something to do with managing air flow past the engine and also insulating the hood from engine heat. People with aftermarket intakes or cross braces will take it off, with no harm, because it won't fit any more.
I very much doubt if most people take it off. But enough do that if you want to replace it you should probably be able to buy one from a member here.

It does benefit in redirection airflow. There was a diagram that our late member Icemark posted a while back. The diagram showed the airflow under the hood and how the cover and the fender vents benefited it. Anyways, I doubt there will be a dramatic ill effect if you have the cover off. If it really kills you, buy a used cover in the parts sales section for cheap.
