I am confused by your question. Is your car flooded and out of warranty or is this a general question? I have never flooded and had the TSB done 2 months ago with the plugs, starter and battery. I can't see how one would flood now unless the battery is weak or a fuel injector issue. They really light-off now.

Mazda dealers have often threatened to not cover a 2nd, third, fourth, etc. de-flood under warranty. I have not seen a post where a repeat flood was not covered, but I cannot say for sure that it has never happened. However, Mazda is certainly under no obligation to de-flood your car for free after the warranty period.

You need to make sure your dealer has done the "Engine cranks no start" Service bulletin which gets you the latest battery, starter and leading plugs. After that your chance of flooding are greatly reduced, particularly if you make the effort to avoid short trips (as recommended in the Mazda Quick Tips booklet).

If you continue to flood, even when you have not done a short trip (ie turned the engine off cold) then there may be something else wrong that should be addressed under warranty.

Whilst waiting for a test drive in a Mazda Dealership I was sat in the demonstrator while the Salesman was on the phone. As I had the keys with me and had heard about the "flooding problem" I thought - I wonder how easy it is to flood. I started and stopped the car repeatedly for a couple of minutes and nothing that even resembled a flooded engine occurred in that time. It was a brand new May 2006 Model. I think now they have the problem pretty well sorted. Since then I have bought a new one and have never had a problem in 3000 miles even after very short runs.

The $24,000 question is does your owner's manual or Quick Tips guide still warn you to take special action when turning the car off after a short trip?

Well the thing is I believe most of the floods are when you do that and leave the car sitting for an extended amount of time and then come back to start it. I could be wrong, since I have never flooded my car.

I agree with both of you - yes it still does say that in my Manual etc and yes I believe it happens if you leave the car to stand but I ve also heard of it happening to people when they stall the car first thing in the morning. It seems to happen to just about everyone once so its like Russian Roulette - when is it going to happen to me. Strange thing is - it used to happen very occasionally to my MX5 under exactly the same circumstances. Happened about three times in two years. Each time it took about five minutes to get it started.
