Ok, I'll take a run at this....

The flashing CEL is a misfire. When is the last time the coils and plugs were changed?

The funky smell and popping is the unburnt fuel trying to get out your tail pipes or combusting in the headers or cat... after you fix this problem, it may be worth it to check your cat, make sure its not clogged or damaged. that you can get replaced under warranty.

I think it is possible that you have two things going on at once... I like the pedal position sensor failing because that would cause your rpms to be all over the place, but the smell, popping, and flashing CEL are all ignition problems caused by coils, wires, and plugs. (or not a good enough air/fuel ratio in the rotor housing, but I doubt that)

You can start by pulling the plugs and inspecting those.... or just changing them now to rule them out at a problem.
