Question Engine help plz

OK so yesterday i went to drive to work and i got about a quarter mile from home and my car lost all power pretty much and the exhaust sounds like someone threw a tennis ball in a fog horn. other problems are as followed. engine light blinks, tcs blinks, traction symbol on tach just stays on, smells like straight gas is comeing out of my tail pipe and it's burning gass like crazy, and the engine is makeing a wierd noise. This is all out of the blue cause i haven't had any problems with it at all besides normal maint.

Anyone got any insight on this cause i'm drawing a blank.

what year is your car?
how many miles?
original owner?

doesn't sound good. Could be a clogged cat or your engine is heading for rotary heaven

I would give it a manual compression test to see if it has major engine damage .
Take out a spark plug from each rotor then put your thumb over each hole in turn while you get someone to crank over the engine .
If you are getting nice even pulses from both rotors your engine may just be ok and you can look elsewhere .
If you have low compression you will definately be able to feel a difference .

it's a 2004 with about 36k. i'm the second owner but the car was cherry when i got it. some older guy the dealer said. O and i'll check the compression tomorrow. I was going to pull all the plugs and check it out to try to find a starting point on where to start looking.

Will a clogged cat really make all that crap happen to the engine.

Never heard of anyone have all that happen with just a clogged cat which is why i suspect something more serious . Do the compression test cause that is easy . If that is not it take the cat off for inspection ....

your engine is still under warranty, I'd recommend getting it to the dealership.

yeah I'd check the compression by yourself with you're fingers first and if a huge difference then its time to take it in to the dealer. I also don't think a clogged cat would b able to make all ur dash lights on and stuff....

Does it idle ok?
Start ok?
Or does it only feel under powered when u try to go WOT or up in the higher rpms?

not under warranty and idle is total ****. it will idle ok when you first start it besides the engine running rough but once you give it some gas it idles totaly shitty.

Something i forgot to is i can swear that my intake sounds much louder like alot of air is rushing though it or i got an air leak or something.

please explain to me why it isn't under warranty. THIS says otherwise...
it's a 2004 with about 36k
you know that the engine is warrantied differently then the rest of the car, right?

^yes.....did u check that u don't have a massive *** vacuum leak...after teh MAF car will run like total **** with a huge vacuum leak...ive seen mice/rodents check on intake piping(plastic) and make a huge hole that caused a huge vacuum leak.....also you say it's using a ton of gas because the short term and long term fuel trim is trying to make up for the leanness(don't thing that's a word) so it's pouring fuel in.!!!

didn't mean to sound like an ******* in my last post so I'll clarify.
RX-8 engine is warrantied for 8 years / 100,000 miles. If your compression is low and your engine is going (which is what you're describing), the engine replacement would be FREE.
The dealership has a procedure to test the compression, if it falls below established thresholds, you get a FREE engine.

hope that helps.

I have checked for leaks. I can't find one though. I'm not a tard just my knowledge isn't as big on this engine as your standard engine.

I did not know that about the warranty though. i'll have to give them a call tomorrow and ask about it. Thanks for that info!!!

the key is WHAT YOU tell them. If you call them and describe a sudden 'loss of power', they'll work with you.
As much as certain dealerships can be a pain in the ***, try to stay calm and cooperative. If you work with them, they'll work with YOU.
Good luck, keep us posted.

ok so the dealer just called and they said they still can't figure it out but that my engine is **** and that it is not covered under the new engine warranty or the lose of power bulletin. I don't see how they can make that call when they can't even find the dam problem.

O and i brought up the lose of power bulletin and the new warranty on the engine and he did everything except come right out and ask me what the hell i was talking about. I don't really think these guys have a clue. I called corprate about it and the lady said she was going to call them because they should know what is wrong with it inorder to state that it is not covered under those.

correct, they'll need to document it on the work order.
-what diagnostic method was performed and outcome of such work.

Stay calm, some dealerships aren't as good as other but you're on the right track.

Yeah i got a call back from corporate and they were not happy with not giving an exact answer on what was wrong to. They told the lady a bunch of bougus info which i corrected and she is going to try to straighten out. they said more than likely they are going to send a factory rep out there if they can't give them a straight answer or maybe just to look at it themselves. I hope this all works or i'm screwed with a car i'm still paying on and can't drive.
