i have a question about engine failures concerning coolant leaking or coolant in oil.has anyone had a problem with coolant in the oil?i have seen some whiteish (almost like thin grease) on my dipstick seal that looks like what water in oil would look like but the oil on the stick looks good and coolant level has not dropped.i guess im jumping the gun but i have noticied this greasy film the last too times i have checked the oil,my car has 8400 miles and have had no problems thus far.

So I'm not the only one! I have noticed the same thing, since the temperature has dropped to around freezing here, and I mentioned it in another posting, but nobody else responded.

I haven't noticed a drop in coolant level either, (well, maybe a little due to the colder temps) and I think it must just be condensation - perhaps I don't drive the car far enough, (app. 17 mi.) or the engine doesn't heat up enough?

Here is the thread, having to do with overcooling of the oil:

Oops - just noticed you posted there also.

I think what you are seeing at the bottom of your dip sticks and possibly inside the oil cap is the left overs from the grease that is used to assemble the engine. absolutly nothing to worry about.

thanks gyro and kkmmaniac,im glad you guys no what im talking about.this i know is not grease and has only started about a month ago.im a honda marine tech and it looks just like motor oil thats been mixed with water(melted vanilla shake)but only on rubber seal at the end of the dipstick.i guess the only thing to do is keep an eye on it and maybe ill change my own oil this time to inspect.i guess i still have 42,000 miles to see if the motor is going to fail. :D

Gyro (thanks for the link) and akrx8:

It looks like we're experiencing the same thing. In my case, I haven't found any condensation or foam on the bottom of the oil cap, but the froth is definitely a moisture and oil combination. I've found some of this toward the reading end of the dipstick as well, but I think it sticks to the dipstick tube and transfers to the stick.

As I said before, it isn't drinking coolant, and confirming what dcfc3s mentioned, I noticed this situation with my 2nd gen. rx7 too. So, I'll keep an eye on it, but I 'ainna gonna bring it to the dealer yet. I don't want them to replace the engine, (or rotate the tires for that matter!) to solve the "issue" if it is a normal and harmless situation.

I also think it is normal. The temps here in New England have huge swings from 20 at night to 60 in the day. The residue was not present the last time I checked, and a cracked housing would not fix itself. I'm not worried yet.
