engine turnover

engine turnover
hey guys I'm new here...well newly registered but I've been lurking for a long time. I'm hopefully buying an 8 within the month...anyway I test drove a LY with 37k on it about 2 weeks ago. I'm not sure if this is normal, but it seemed like the engine took a long time to turnover. Is this a typical thing, did someone not shut it off right before me, or is this something to be worried about? Thanks guys!

What is a "long time"? If it cranked for more than about 2-3 seconds, I would suggest you have a reputable rotary tech evaluate the engine health. Could be low compression or could be something simple like old/fouled spark plugs or something else just as mundane like a weak battery. Since it's an '04, it may not have had the heftier battery and bigger starter motor installed as part of that particular service bulletin. Is this a MT or AT?

Its a MT GT. I'd say it was right around the 3 sec mark to turnover. Once she was started up she was pretty smooth and there didnt seem to be any lack of power. It just had me concerned when I started it...like....is it going to start?
thanks again

good way to test is to test drive it 1st, shut it off after is warm, than start it, the dealer may move it around without letting it warm up, causing hard start following that.

yeah i think you're ok I have an 04 and every once and awhile it i don't drive it very far (it is warm but just barely) sometimes i come out after it cools down and it is like 3 seconds to start but rarely happens just every once and awhile

Like I said, the car may not have had the beefier battery and starter service done and that could account for the apparent extended start time. With the bigger batter and starter my '04 starts up almost instantly, like before you can count "1001". Call MNAO Customer Service (800-222-5500), give them the VIN and tell them you are contemplating purchasing this car and would like to know what services have been performed on the car. It might be enlightening.

Its quite possible the battery was weak, especially if it's sitting on a lot and not being driven much. The car does have a draw on the battery while sitting -- like most cars nowadays with keepalive memory, alarms, etc... After a couple of weeks you will get a sluggish start even with a strong battery.
For a used RX8 I would definitely get a compression test before buying.

well thanks for the number...I called and they said it has no outstanding recalls on it, and the powertrain is covered till march 09 or 60,000mi. Would the ford dealer be able to do a compression test or would I have to take it somewhere else?
thanks again.
hey xsnipersgox, you shoot a lot? nice rig in the sig.
