Given how many people have commented on having the same exact problem, I don't think the OEM part was fabricated from a special plastic or if it is, it's not performing to spec. People who go fast often will then have to continually replace this part at a cost of $200 each time. Given the price of a plastic bin, MM's fix would have to fail unrealistically fast to make getting the $200 OEM part economical.

Nope. I just called them and told them I was attacked by an angry truck tire retread. They wrote me a check the next day for the cost of the part, labor to install it and paint.
Of course, it comes painted and I installed it myself, so that easily covered my comprehensive deductible.

BTW - the OEM undertray is polypropylene. Nothing special.

I had that happen to me at only 115mph. Cost a couple hundred to replace. Your solution looks more economical.

Have you had the time to take it up to 140 and see if it will pop off? Kinda seems the if that whole piece pops off at once that will be a big piece of place rollin around upder your car, possibly causing damage. Dont get me wrong though very good idea and money savings.

If it still gets damaged, maybe go to 16 ga aluminum or 20 ga stainless sheet.

How ironic that this thread got bumped. I was thinking of this thread as I watched a Dodge Charger R/T owner tearing off the underside of his car at the gas station yesterday.
I can only assume, part of it was hanging down, he didn't know what to do so he went with the brute force method.

Maybe I should have told him about this...

Sheet metal is a bit heavy for something that is so poorly supported to begin with.
If my solution ever fials (so far, so good), I will build up a fiberglass replacement.

I replaced the the c-clips and machine screws, that came with the Mazdaspeed bumper install kit, with a much better threaded j-clips that takes a short stainless allen head bolt. I also used loc-tite blue and if one ever does come loose (unlikely) it is not going to puncture a tire.
