exhaust popping
It seems to be something I've noticed a lot on the aftermarket exhaust systems, as well as stock. Is it unique to the rotary, or is it the rich fuel map??

All rotories with aftermarket or free flowing exhausts do this. With the RX8 and my RX8Stroe exhaust I've found that keeping the gas pedal depressed just a tiny bit during shifts prevents the popping.

Unique to the rotary whether stock or aftermarket. The motor has ports, not valves, and these ports do not seal off as quickly as valves do. When you goose the throttle, it will push a lot of fuel into the combustion chamber. This fuel sometimes goes unburnt and gets past the ports, which results in unburnt fuel in the exhaust, hence the "popping" noise. Nothing abnormal, just a trademark rotary characteristic.

To my understanding this is an inherent characteristic of the rotary engine. Personally, I love the pop, it turns heads, and makes another notch on the long, beautiful, list of things that make this car so very unique.

Like I said in my original post, fuel is getting through the ports unburnt into the exhaust, causing the popping noise. Whether it is due to the rich fuel map or the ports, it is still happening. I do not think even the RENESIS design has completely cured this issue. It is inherent in an engine that uses ports to release exhaust that unburnt fuel will sometimes still get through.

Ricer is Nicer.....

Valves, ports, whatever.....mine pops lots.
It is worse (or better?) since my 'L' flash - it now pops between every gear if I am anywhere near 'spirited' acceleration.
I like it....
......I like it a lot!

Yes, My 89 GTUs Rx7 does it and I love it too! Just another unique characteristic of the rotary. Just try to forget the fact that it shot an excess of unburnt fuel into the exhaust, hence causing you to refill your tank in even a shorter amount of time than normal! When I am on the track, I get about 8 MPG! Yeah!
