Extreme power loss...car basically died this morning.

On my way to school, about 1/2 mile from my house, my tire pressure light came on. I pulled over and figured the tire pressure wasn't that bad (I kicked the tires). Of course, knowing kicking the tires isn't a good way to check..I turned around and headed home to take another vehicle.

When I am about a 1/2 block away from my house, my car experiences an extreme power loss...I am crawling at 5mph. I give it some gas and let out the clutch. after letting the clutch out, the mph drops to zero and I push the clutch back in to prevent the car from stalling. With the clutch near the biting point I rev the car to about 5 grand, and the car is only going about 3 miles per hour. I let out the clutch again and the mph drops back to zero.

I park the car..which is a chore because there is basically no power...and then I stay home for a bit. My dad offers to call roadside assistance for me while I head to class. What in the world is going on?

Also, it was cold this morning. The coldest morning here since last winter. I am sure that the chilly weather could have been a factor. However, I am puzzled as to why the TIRE PRESSURE light came on..and I suffer engine power loss? I understand that the tire pressure may be low because the weather is cold, but ENGINE power loss? I'm guessing it was a coincidence. Tire pressure happened to be low when the engine decided to act nuts.

Yes, I did get the recall work done.

I had the tire thing happen today to, which, as you did, I attributed to the cold weather. I didnt have any noticable power loss. This is a very disheartening story. Let us know what happens.

Got the car back from mazda tonight. They said that the car ran strong. My only guess is that I didn't warm it up enough. I warm it up about 10 mins..today it was only about 7 mins and it was MUCH colder. Should have been more patient. Live and learn. Thanks for the input guys. Don't worry...I haven't stumbled upon another Rotary gremlin.

there is no way the car would only run no more than 5 mph, even it hasnt be warm up.

but oh well, as long as mazda has your record. u'll be fine.

its why i asked the questions i did. he hadnt gone long/far enough for the tires to warm up so his car wsnt warmed- he ran against the cold rev limit and probably triggered the dsc with low tire pressure so the car went into limp home mode because too many things going on.

Regarding the 5mph - I had the same problem a couple of months ago. My service writer told me a flow-meter part in my oil cooling system had failed and needed to be replaced. The 5mph deal is a safety deal in the computer programming.

The replacement cost was about $1100 (!!) but even though my MT hadaround 73K on it my service writer said the part should not have failed and he got Mazda to cover the replacement. Took 3 days.
