fd3s voltage regulator on rx8 alternator
I am fd owner and my friend have rx8 6sp 2004 model.
The alternator of rx8 fault and mazda ask 700 euro for new one.
The problem of alternator is the voltage regulator.
I have a spare alternator from fd3s and everything is the same with rx8 voltage regulator exept one detail ,rx8 have a capacitor parallel with brushes who probably is new design to reduse the arc from brushes.
What do you guys think can I use the voltage regulator from fd3s?
Also can someone post the connector pinout from rx8 alternator ?
Thank you

Thanks man for your offer but with 230 euro I can buy new voltage regulator from mazda.
Well Today I will try the alternator with fd3s regulator inside and post reply if it is work.
Also there is some regulators on ebay oem very cheap with brushes.

This is from rx7 also but if it is work then rx8 owners can save a lot of money if the alternators fail

first off i think i recall what you speak of in an rx8 is a generator.. and second the regulation comes from the ecu..
this is not gospel, but it is what i recall from lots of reading.. if it was that easy it would have been done and mentioned already..
btw, you can buy a used alt for the rx8 for 125us. and shipping is not crazy... but you need to figure out what the issue is. this is not something that usually dies without huge mileage on it. or some aftermarket wiring taking it out.
i am at 103k miles on the first one. yes i have a spare. i know of people that have over 166k miles on the first..
food for thought.. take it for what it is worth..

I don't buy Kool-Aid
I dont think you can open the Alternator and rebuild or replace the voltage regulator like on old Cars. I had a 2001 3G Eclipse and I could not do it. Had to buy a new one.
I dont think you can do it to the 8. You might have to buy a new one.
I think if you search around online you can find the oem specks of the Alternator and get yours checked out at Autozone for free. Drive the Car there they come out and test it, let you know where its at. Dont know if you have Autozones where your at but if not a good Car shop can read it for you.

If you see the epc from mazda there is a spare parts for alternator
look at the pics
the alternator have 2 circuits that can be damage the voltage regulator and the rectifier the coils is very rare to have problem.

We had a new starter put in my wife's Toyota because the solenoid went bad. Just the contacts. Some time afterwards a friend who's the parts manager at another dealer told me that they could have replaced just the contacts. BUT - the contacts are not listed, and the mechanics at his dealership just know which parts will fit. Officially only the whole starter is listed.

Zoom Zoom....
Ken, unfortunately, Mazda has priced the alternator rebuild kit (including a new regulator) almost as high as a whole new OEM alternator.
Like Swoope said, you have two options for lower prices, find an alternator at a breaker's yard, or take the alternator to a good auto electrical place - maybe they can just change the 4 diodes or give you better advise on using the FD regulator.
(I think the FD regulator should work, however, I value my car too much to try it without specialist advise)
