Filtermag alternative?
I just fitted a filtermag a few weeks ago and I'm just waiting for the next oil change to cut open the filter to compared to my last oil filter without the filtermag to see if it really does work like they say it does.
But another thing I've noticed accidentally one day was that I was brushing with my electric tooth brush (sonicare) and I was laying down the brush head when the magnets at the end of the head picked up a pair of keys I had on the table. They are about the size of a nickle and there's 2 of them on the brush. I was surprised at the strength of the magnets they put on those sonicare toothbrushes and I think it actually is about the same, if not more powerful than the ones in the filtermag? And the thing is that the brush heads are disposables (smack myself for not ever keeping my old ones) but I think I might try and pry those loose and put in on my filter the next time I change my brush.
"Ghetto mod" perhaps? :D
Oh and ummm... I'm not trying to say ppl should do this instead of buying a filtermag (in case they try to sue me!) lol

I'm at 29000kms right now gonna change oil at about 32000 so yea I"ll post pics when I get them!
It surrounds about 1/3rd of the filter, there's larger models but then our small filters on the 8 can only use their smallest one (that is the same model used on motorcycles, go figure)

As an oil filter will only catch particles 20-30 microns or above, anything below this just circulates around the engine...which equals WEAR!..
For those who don't know Mazda in the 09 RX-8's re-introduced a Sump Pan magnet (inside the pan), which they last used in the FC RX-7 (same magnet).,
So I can only come to the conclusion that Metal Particles smaller than the thickness of your hair is doing damage to the RENESIS, otherwise why did Mazda re-introduce an
internal sump magnet for 09's after an absence of 10 Years without one in ALL FD RX-7's and 04-08 RX-8's????
SO I can Thoroughly recommend the following product...

The SS250 Magnetic Filter to be exact....have a look at the site...and BUY one, or from eBay.
I have also order one so I can have double the Magnetic catching of metal Particles.
You can also use the STRONG Magnets that are used inside ANY old PC Hard drive, Pull one apart and you will see the two magnets inside, they are FLAT though, but should still hold on the oil filter's metal case.
DO NOT USE FRIDGE MAGNETS OF ANY KIND, ONE THEY COULD FALL OFF AND TWO THEY ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH.
And yes I know this is an OLD thread revival...

I received my SS250 FilterMag Today in the Post...only 7 days from the USA guys...pretty good.
Anyway, I will install magnet over this weekend, so it will get use for 2000 KMS (1200 Miles) until my 10,000 KM (6,000 Miles) Service with Oil Filter Change.
I tried the SS250 on a new Oil Filter I have in my stock, it clamps on really well and holds tight.
I hope I have enough clearance with the SS250 on my cars Oil Filter Body, I have the 09 Series II RX-8 with the 180 degree (approx) alloy flange that is in the way, I may have to shave or cut some of the Black Plastic Frame that holds the 8 magnets together.
Will let you know the outcome...
Series I (04-08) RX-8 owners (any other RX Models) will have NO trouble in clicking on the SS250 Filter Magnet...easy as cleaning your teeth!

OK, Decided to fit the Filter-mag today..
All went smooth, simple as, however there is only one spot the SS250 (only one for the RX-8) will fit on 09 models and that is on the top side of the filter body.
You are meant to position it underneath for a horizontal/angled filter but there is just no way you can do it, the alloy flange is in the way plus a few bolt heads.
It is also meant to be away from the heat side of your engine, but again not possible, however, it appears there will be air circulation there being at the front and bottom of the rotary timing cover.
Fortunately the filter is on a slope as you have to remove the Magnet before you unscrew the oil filter, but the contaminated oil wont run back into the engine...not possible.
I will report back in 2000 KMs when I do an oil change and see if I can catch or see any metallic particles.

Results
OK, Did my Oil filter change, here are the results from the Filtermag after about 1,000 MILES...ONLY!
Considering my 09 has an Internal factory sump pan magnet, I was surprised at how much "metal" the Filtermag picked up, so it now also filters the oil as I am driving, the sump one does it when the car sits.
I definitely would recommend ALL Series 1 and FD RX-7 owners to have this Magnet on their oil filters as you have no other catching device for fine metal particles that wear off below 25 microns in size....your oil filter just will not catch them.
The benefits...cleaner oil and filter which must help engine life.
The particles are like Black 'Toothpaste' when you rub it between your fingers, extremely fine METAL!.

I believe the product works as advertised but there is no long term test results to see just how much more mileage life it adds.
After 90K that is $150 for filters as opposed to $1,350. Let's say the car gets $160K before the engine needs work as opposed to 200K (again no hard data to even guesstimate).
That would equate to $ 265 compared to 2385 at 3K interval changes. Go ahead and enjoy those last hard 40K miles with all the other repairs. I'll give you the thumbs up when I pass by in a new rotary car.
After 90K that is $150 for filters as opposed to $1,350. Let's say the car gets $160K before the engine needs work as opposed to 200K (again no hard data to even guesstimate).

The Filtermags are REUSEABLE..that is it is a ONCE of Expense of $38.00..that is all, you reuse it when you change your oil filter at NORMAL service intervals.
It lasts a lifetime.
I guess though Mazda Japan just installed an oil filter magnet in the sump of 09 RX-8's for NO reason.
Mazda have not used this magnet in any rotary since 1985-1989 FC RX-7.
Is this enough eveidence to show that a magnet (S) in your oil filter system has engineering merit???

See your point. It's a one time purchase of $45 magnets. I think it was late at night so I had a young senior moment there. Still though, the engine is eroding away. It helps slow it down but how much are you really gain in mileage is my question.
There's a little secrect an electrician told me about wires ends. If you put some vaseline on the wire ends they don't corrode. Granted, it takes a long time for new home wires to corrode and break at the connections but it does work from his experience. Maybe the auto industry holding back, I don't know. I had a 85 golf with 250K still running strong with no magnets so I guess that's why I'm a skeptic.

I've tried putting a magnet out of a hard disk onto my family SUV, where the oil filter sits 95-degrees from the upright position (read a really BAD position)...
After almost 2 years, at least 3 oil changes and occasional off-roading, the magnet hasn't fallen off yet.
(I heard that the magnets in hard drives are pretty strong magnets... guess there was some truth to them.)
I guess someone could try using that on the 8 if they wanted to...
BTW... in theory the attracted particles should be slightly charged after being near a magnet for extended periods of time in hot oil... so in theory even if you remove the magnet the particles shouldn't immediately pass back into the engine...
Now if you start rev'ing then it could be an issue..

Just DO IT!!
I just wanted to inform ALL RX-8 owners that IMO this is a critical MOD or ADD on which will help to save your engine and keep your engine OIL from circulating minute metal particles around your engine below 25 microns...your Oil Filter CAN NOT Catch these.

I duct taped a couple of hard drive magnets to my oil filter. The only thing I would like to do different is to the magnets themselves. They are glued (epoxy ?) to a metal bracket and I would like to separate them for a more convenient installation. If someone knows an easy way to do that, could you post it.

i too have been running the filter mag-- i have a relocated oil filter that makes it easier.
damn thing works--its cheap--and to the guys that are willing to run synthetic to complain about cost---thats just stupid.
