So it really comes down to just whether you think 10w is thin enough for cold starts, and whether you're getting worthwhile benefit for the extra cost.

I go along with nycgps's recommendation of extra virgin olive oil. Particularly if you leave off the "olive oil" part.

Yeah thats what my manual says. Royal Purple meets SL across the board, though for some reason only their 5w40 meets SM. Maybe it is because they went to the trouble of having that viscosity approved for the other European standards?

Iirc, Royal Purple doesn't qualify for SM because it exceeds the maximum content of ZDDP. While this may be a good thing for preventing metal-to-metal contact in extreme situations, API SM calls for lower amounts because the phosphorus in ZDDP will poison catalytic converters over time. When you consider the rotary puts much more oil through the pipe than a normal piston engine, this could be important to you. Or maybe not.

Likewise, "Racing Oil" doesn't just mean "Hell a Good Oil", it means it is engineered for racing. All engineering is a balance of compromises. Some of the things that make for good racing oil are not necessarily the best for the street. Lack of detergents is one that has been mentioned. Getting back to the RP example, it may be that Idemitsu Racing Oil also has a butt-load of ZDDP, though I haven't looked up the specs. And I'm not sure the statement "exceeds API SM" is the same as "Certified API SM". Anyone seen the API Donut on the bottle? Maybe it exceeds SM in what they feel are the relevant qualities, but doesn't meet all of the requirements. Or maybe it does, I don't know.

Anyway these are some considerations one needs to examine before they claim to have done a "ton of research".

And as far as ending all Oil-related debate? Fuhgettaboutit!!

Idemitsu has 10 times the average amount of moly in it. Moly doesn't like to stay in suspension in large quantities.
