First oil change...
So I evacuated florida because of a hurricane...wife an I and dog drove to family in CT...then needed first oil change at 3000 miles. took it to a CT Mazda/Lincoln/Mercury dealer near Hartford. Got the car back with the invoice listing 5w30 oil installed. Questioned why not 5w20 as per spec....they said it was, just typo error due to computer inventory glitch...all the oil they use is 5w30 and the puter is set up to print that out on a listing for oil, but i should have confidence that they used 5w20 on our 8. Took it 50 miles away to a Mazda exclusive dealer...told the story...they said 3rd time they've heard it from customers. moral...either do your own oil change or take your 8 to a Mazda dealer who has lots of experience with 8's. I'll be dropping a note to Mazda US when I get back home to florida. I'm still not sure how imperative the 5w20 oil is vs: 5w30....but I'm just trying to play by the rules and keep the car as happy as possible.

you should have asked the service guys to see the containers of 5w-20 just for piece of mind. but what they said is true- most dealers dotn have the option in their software to chosse 5w-20 to print out. most have an "other " to choose and then they can type in what ever they used but the paperwork people often forget to do so or arent told by the tech what was actually used. it CAN be a simple clerical error BUT you should double check. btw 5w-30 is what is called for in otehr countries so it wont do any harm. and as long as the oil was put in there by a mazda tech it has to be covered. now if you went to an independant or did it yourself and some other oil was used then they could deny a warrentee claim IF Mazda could prove teh oil was the cause of whatever problem you have.

thanks for the reply....agreed. Bought the peace of mind with another change and filter with the correct oil, but good to know it didn't do any harm for the short distance (50 miles) driven with the 5w30. Thanks again.

I run Castrol GTX 10w30 in our 8. It hasn't affected the mileage in the least. She is averaging 23 mpg. I went to 30w because of oil analysis' that people have been doing for trend analysis. They have the paper work that shows the oil is getting diluted to the equivalent of a 5w10 or 10w10 at oil change.
All cars outside of the US have a 30w oil recommended if I am not mistaken. I just cant remember if its 5w30 or 10w30.
