Gas guage problems

Mazda has recently did the recall on my 8 last week. The one about the shield on the gas tank, well just before that my car started getting horrible gas mileage, i thought. And i told the manager about it and she said they would look into it. Well i got my car back and this is actually the second time that the car has started getting bad mileage i thought. The first time they did a computer update and it fixed it. Well back to this day, i got into the car and saw my tank was almost 3/4 empty, and the mileage showed 135.4 miles. That is terrible miles per i was think so then i filled up my gas tank and it shut off quick and i looked and it said i only put in 8.5 gallons, which is almost half a tank correct. Because i thought these cars have 15.9 gallon tanks. Now i just got the letter saying that the recall is done because of these problems and it could affect the gas guage, so i'm just wondering has anyone else experience these problems in there 8 recently or in the past?

super high sulphur fuels will screw up the gas gauge although it usually makes them say they are full when they are empty...
