Question Gas Mileage

Has anyone heard of a part that you can install to increase the gas mileage and get better performance.

My '04 RX-8 is drinking gas like crazy - I am getting worse mileage than my 99 GT Mustang..

I have already checked the following

1. Clean MAF
2. Clean Airfilter
3. Clean Throttle Body
4. Check Plugs
5. Check coils
6. Check Plug wires
7. Even after having the new recall motor put in the mileage is still terrible.

I have not added anything it is still stock (for warranty)

Any and all help is appreciated.....

Yes. A garage.

Lots of threads on this topic. Feel free to search. There is no part or modification you can do. You can modify your driving style (look up "hypermiling") but that defeats the purpose of having a sports car.

If mileage can be improved by a DIY part, don't you think Mazda would build that into the 8?

20-25 mpg

I own an 04, and I have a KN intake and greddy cat back. The only way I am getting this mileage is skipping gears when I shift. 1 to 3 to 6 etc... Try it, it should make a difference.

I put something about an add on part in the "Cumulative Gas Mileage (Gas MPG)" Thread. Maybe I should have posted it here...

I was flipping through the TV channels and came across a show where they build muscle cars. This show had a segment where they test products to see if they actually work. They tested a Fitch Fuel Catalyst (in a controlled environment) and got improved gas mileage and horse power. Anyone hear of this product? Anyone have one installed?

I have an email into the company to see which product would work best with the RX8, since they don't have the car listed.

Unless you have an actual mechanical problem, it's all about driving conditions with this car. Rotary gulps gas at idle. Stop and go traffic will seriously lower your MPG. A month ago, the daily traffic jam on my commute home was eliminated by a new bridge. My fuel economy immediately improved by 4 miles per gallon.

Other than that, 2 things you could try

- 87 Octane gasoline has been known to give better mileage. About 1 mpg in my experience. YMMV, depending on your local gas stations and refineries.

- Using oil premix may also give a benefit.

Premix FTW! Check out my latest post in the premix thread for details... Basically went from a little over 19 to a little under 22 with 7oz of UCL per tank...

How much does 7oz of UCL cost you? I hope it's less than 3$, because that's about how much you're saving per tank. Subtract the cost of the premix from the 3$ saved per tank and I'm just not sure it's worth the time/effort.

The garage comment cracked me up.

I got a big bottle at Pep Boys for 10 bucks... I think it was 40 oz... Gonna see about ordering online next... Gonna post $/mile figures in the premix thread once I get around to updating my mileage spreadsheet to include cost of premix...

A garage? Try getting a Hyundai!
