Gas and oil consumption

Hello everyone. I am considering the purchase of an RX8 and wanted to ask first about gas and oil consumption. I have read several articles from Car & Driver and Autoweek and they seem to indicate that the RX8 sucks these two down.

It may be the driving style, who knows. Anything you can tell me about this and more will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

wow........haven't heard this ? before. LOL

okay first offf a rotary engine is made to burn oil..it injests in into the combustion chamber to coat the seals.

second i tis a gas hog. you can get liek 17-18 in city..but if you get on it the mpg will take a nose dive.....i get abotu 15-16...but i red line it a few times everydrive :D nothign like a song sung in the key of 9000

oh highway you can get between abotu 21-24 (depending on cruising speed)...stay at or around 70mph adn you will see around 23mpg for highway. hope that helps you out.

I put one quart of oil in between oil changes which is no big deal. I watch my MPG real close (hoping it will magically go up) and get about the same as army_rx8. If low MPG bothers you then don't look at sportscars. Even the 350z and S2000 does not get much better mpg in the real world.

What I hate about those articles is that they say the 8 burns oil but then it dosen't explain the workings of the renesis and that it's supposed to use oil. If it dosen't, then you are going to have some serious problems.

Comments apply to the AutoWeek evaluation of the RX-8:
Yeah, and when AW states it in terms of "burns oil" it definitely has a negative connotation to it, especially to those persons familiar with terms used in describing piston engine performance. I was a bit upset at the WAY they stated that in each of their updates on the car. When they say it "burns oil" that is an immediate turn-off for those who don't understand the design and functioning of the rotary engine, and there go the car sales.

If they had said something like; "___ qts of oil were consumed as a necessary and expected feature of rotary engine design", it would have been more precise and more understandable to the uninitiated readers. Your bad, AW!

To some extent, their reporting on fuel mileage was misleading as well. Since mileage is to a great degree dependent on how "hard" the car is driven, one would expect a test drivers fuel mileage to be lower than what the average driver would experience. Let's face it, the job of a test driver is to wring out the car to see what it can do. They did allude to that briefly in one update, however. When they questioned Mazda about the poor fuel mileage, Mazda suggested they go easier on the little pedal on the right. But in their wrap-up, that was not even mentioned. Again, your bad AW.

I can't believe people make such a fuss about oil consumption. I've driven over 20,000 KMs and had to add a whopping $20 worth of extra oil...WOW! And I check it every month or so now, or if I go on a road trip or drive the car hard.

Gas, on the other hand, yeah that's annoying...
