That's what I had thought, but then why do some premixes say they are 50:1 and others 100:1? (ie, if its just the ratio you use for a particular engine, why would one oil say one and another say the other?)

dont really have an answer. but some stuff that i have done that seemed to work.. for the street to augment the omp..
4 to 5 oz.. or 8 to 10oz of mmo.
for the track, i was doing ~ 10oz. well last track weekend as i have a low compression motor i did 16oz.. (btw, it was the redline you have posted!)
well it was a good thing. first no drama track weekend i have ever had!
your mileage may very, objects in the mirror are closer than they appear, and dont forget to premix the premix!!!!

Good to know you are using the Redline. Seems like a good product for us. And, good news on the track day - I think I'm going to bring mine out sometime this year.
One thing that did come out of their aritcle is that there is an upper limit they offer in terms of ensuring the oil will completely dissolve in gas - I think it was something like 5:1, which is a touch on the rich side.

Just got my car back and another new engine and my dealership is very knowledgeable about the rotary and apparently visits this forum often . Most of the techs there either drive a rx8 or a fd7 so they know all about the issues and about premixing. Before sending in my blown core they took it apart to see what type of failure i had, and right off the bat they noticed the inside of my engine was pristine (No carbon build up). He called me and said whatever you used as a premix, stop using it. He said it look as if it was just a straight solvent being injected into the engine which kept it free of carbon but it looked like it prevented the oil to properly lubricate the housings. He told me that he used to premix with Idemitsu and thats probably the only one he personally recommends but he also stopped using that one because it kept clogging his fuel filter and eventually he lost his first engine to running lean because of a fuel issue. On his re-manufactured engine he simply increased his omp flow and runs 10w-30 in his engine doing changes every 3k miles and he currently has 110k on that engine. He told me it really seems like luck of the draw with the engines because he has seen some come in for basic maintenance that are treated like ****, barely get oil changes, and still run the 5w-20, yet they have 140k on them and run perfectly.....
They need to send the engine out tom but he said he will take some pics of the core and either send them to me or post them himself. He is a member but its apparently a big NO NO to get on these forums and give his opinion if they go against "warranty"

I was not blaming the premix for my engine failure as its obvious as to why my engine went. It was simply the point that a tech who has seen hundreds of these engines was able to tell i was running something through my engine that caused it to look that way.

How many 2-stroke race motors, snowmobiles, weedwhackers, etc. have cat converters?
My only point being, not all 2 stroke oils are created equal, which is where stuff like recommended ratios etc come from

Yes, but I assume those ratios are for a reciprocating motor that has no other source of lubrication for the rings?
100:1 would be 1.3 oz per gallon. That's pretty rich, according to conventional wisdom, for a Renesis that still uses the OMP.
But, I do agree that the reccomended ratio is an indication of the lubes effectiveness.

Before I dump it in my fuel tank I just wanted to make sure this

****, now this premix stuff has me worried. The pump has about 108,000 miles on it but only 20,000 of it really is straight premixing. I replaced this with the new upgraded BHR unit.

To be honest, since I can't tell without a new fuel pump I'm not sure what I'm looking at there in terms of it being bad other than seeing some debris and the fact I can't see through the filter which in my experience fundamentally doesn't look good.

hey, whats up? my name's phill and i've had my rx8 for about 6 months now. i've taken it to a jiffy lube for engine oil and transmission oil change, but since times are hard for everyone, i wanna be able to do the oil changes myself. i've already done the engine oil change, but i wasn't able to find the transmission oil pan. can someone help me out?
