I still have almost 2 gallons left when the light comes on, and I have often run it down to this level (I usually fill-up when it's down to 1/8 tank). No problems with fuel delivery or the pump in 50,000 miles, so I don't consider this an issue.
Also, I think premixing the premix before adding it to the tank is a bit of overkill. I've been premixing since the car was new by just adding it to the tank before each fillup - no issues.

when it hits yellow you really have 2.5 gal left.
if you dont track your car you will never have an issue..
premix or not..

At my local Autozone (which i also happen to work at) we have a limited selection of 2 stroke oil. The lucas semi synthetic we sell in 2.6oz conatiners which is tiny and insanely expensive $2.49. We also have valvoline outboard 2 cycle which is mostly for marine engines and we have Coastal tc-w3 multi purpose 2 cycle oil.
Should i try the Coastal since its multi purpose and sounds like my best option (it comes in a quart). Has anyone tried Coastal 2 cycle? How is it compared to the other premixes and does brand really matter since i hear idemitsu is the best because its formulated for rotaries. I dont really have access to the idemitsu and dont want to order a whole case since i just want to premix occasionally i think buying quarts would be my best solution.

Premixing occasionally is pointless. Heck there really isn't any scientific data to show using it all the time even prolongs engine life in a street car. Look up the MSDS sheet of the Coastal and compare it to Idemitsu. It it is T3CW then don't use it if you have a cat.

I think 4-6oz per tank is the general consensus for non-track purpose. Moreso if you're on the track.

Hi Guise,
thanks in advance if you have any input. for my questions. I have a 2005 RX8 that just got the engine and cat replaced at 64k miles by mazda. I lucked out as it failed smog recently when i moved to CA and came in under warranty for replacement of both. Though from the sounds of it you guys don't like the mazda factory reman engines.
I would like this engine to last longer than the original (i know maybe wishful thining since a mazda reman)so I want to do the premix and am thinking about doing the Idemitsu. I had never done it before on my original engine.
Will doing premix wear out my new cat faster? If I should remove the cat and save it for only smog tests and replace with cat bypass what kind of trouble can I get in here in CA?
again thanks

I would be a little worried about going catless in california since they are so serious about smog. It is a huge federal fine to be caught, I just don't know what a cop would actually do since they are state level. Probably just make you take it in for a smog test, but if you were a repeat offender they may catch on. If your midpipe has a resonator on it you could just say one of those is the cat.
Anyone ever had the misfortune of a cop inspecting your car, and finding no cat? What happened to you?

premixing will not do any harm to your cat. Proper premix will be combusted in your engine, long before it could get to your cat. Why risk going catless and face fines and also risk loss of your auto insurance if caught (yes that has happened in some states). The modest hp boost from less restrictive exhaust is NOT worth the problems.

I'm too lazy to look around, but have you posted any pics of where you put the reservoir?
Just curious as to other people's set ups. I still need/intend to put one in, as well as a catch can.

Also premix can harm your cat, if you use the wrong type. If someone were to start reading this thread and get only through the first few pages they would see marine 2 stroke as recommended. If they use that they will end up messing up their cat, according to posts later on in this thread.
Anyway I am more worried about the car itself toasting the cat. I would much rather not have to deal with that particular issue with this car.

I guess it just depends on where you live. I still have not seen anyone who has actually gotten a ticket or fine for it. So far have not had any problems yet, even the emissions tester guy didn't say anything. He was crouched down by my door to attach his obd2 connector and when he started the car I could smell the exhaust standing a few feet behind him, so I know he could smell it.

Now I just check whenever I get a cel, and then delete it. When I didn't have an obd2 scanner I just checked weekly at autozone(or whenever the cel popped up), which is honestly not the best option. So far there have only been 2 or 3 cels, p0420(cat) and one for the o2 sensor on the midpipe I forget what the other one was.
Since my last cel reset I have gone over 550 miles, and today my cel finally came back on. So sometimes it can be off for half a month or more. Sometimes it comes back within a few days, seems random.

Note: I said proper premix won't harm your car . If you use just plain old marine 2 oil it won't lubricate the seals properly or combust fully in the engine, Use only premix designed and tested in rotary engines like Pettit Racing's Protek-R and the Idemitsu. I know some of the RX owners here have removed their cats and gotten away with it. I live on the East Coast and here in New Jersey drivers have been fined and lost their insurance for going catless.
If you love to live dangerously go ahead and remove the cat, the benefit is small and the risk large. With proper care and use, the rotary engine will not fry the cat. I have had past RXs with original cats with over 100,000 miles on the odometer.

You don't need a wankel specific premix, just a good premix. Do you think pettit has its own lubricant? Protek is just rebranded 2 stroke oil, a simple google search will tell you exactly which one.
