stock cat no.
the cat is on the second engine.. it has seen several different premixes..
but doubt that is an issue.. cat problems seem to stem from flooding, then a light off..

I'll snap his neck.
Decided I wanted to get started premixing, and I'm on the wait list for the Idemitsu like everyone else. So I decided to pick something else up to hold me over.
Based on Jax recommending the Valvoline 2-cycle outboard marine oil, I picked up the Valvoline multipurpose. Picked that one for two reasons: one, it said "ashless" on the bottle; and two, they mention rotary engine premix on this link to it: http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPage...il+-+Valvoline
Although my guess is that it is identical to the outboard one.
Anyway, put 4 oz into the tank last night and topped it off.
Any thoughts on this particular oil for premixing?
Thanks!

NYC- That must be nice, I'm still waiting on my FIRST case to come in. It keeps getting pushed back. Was supposed to be here a month ago.
Those bottles do NOT look good. Let's hope whatever that gunk is stayed in the bottle and not in the oil.

Heh ... I dont know, I saw the Protek-R thing on this site about a year ago. but for some reason I dont really believe in it. Cuz seriously, I think Idemitsu has a point there, they race for Mazda, and when racing Rotary they feed it with Idemitsu only makes me feel good about it. I dont follow 100% Mazda's route. but at least Im sure this will work.
Good thing I did not step into this *landmine* ...

sorry to be slighly off topic. but can use some help, and i have read as much on this thread as possible. so suggestions welcomed pls.
here's the scenario,
- been driving around with an assumed exhaust smell in cabin, but later fixed as just a leak in the oil press. line from the RB gauges. but also assumed the smell may be from the hi-heat paint on the exhaust system. found out last night that the cat was glowing red hot after getting rid of an annoying civic si challenger.
not normal to say the least. but thought the cat may be getting so hot as my oil temps and water temps usually run 210 degrees around 75 ambient temp. could this be from having a little more premix in the tank? this is where i get back on topic.
brought car in to dealership for check out of the fumes and suggested the most updated reflash... sad to say the least that there was no "sticker" added anywhere to suggest the job was done or anyway of knowing what flash i currently have... but from another thread recommend the 20 brake pump needle sweep for a current flash of no lower than "L".
frustrated and read most threads and finally have a concern that i would like to get any help on. i guess i have the 3 concerns listed above for anyone kind enough to help answer or point in right direction again.
the 3 concerns are again,
- cat running really hot and starting to glow
- PREMIX...is it causing the problem above? and why they refuse to do any service is its a "bad" cat...it has nothing to do with having hi-heat paint on the cat heat-shield.
- reflash...looked, but don't know where they have the sticker positioned if job was completed and if having the reflash will help at all in preventing cat burn-out.
what are ppl's input on this? should i just relax on the 1/2 oz. to 1 gal. premix or stop completely and recheck the condition of the cat?
is it even normal to see the cat hot enough to be glowing??? never noticed or took a closer look til now.
sorry so long, and thanks in advance for any suggestions or help provided on the subject.

^^yeah, i must have gotten that mixed up. its just to reset...huh? haven't been a long owner. but would like to be on the most right track in performance/reliability.
thanks crh.
MM: so then the cat in its current state of slightly glowing and glowing brighter when floored is somewhat normal and expected for my 8? i guess thats my major concern. and thanks for the input on the flash i have may already been the most current. saved me the trouble of humiliating myself. if all is good and really the normal life of the car, then i shall go my merry way and continue premixing...
although i somewhat feel toooo much premix may have some premature cat damage, i still feel unsafe if i went crazy so i'll prolly do 4oz to the tank. does that work? i can't go too wrong either way.
thanks guys... much appreciated for the help. i guess i just got frustrated and my mind is cluttered.
thanks crh.

Cat glow is pretty much universal - a side effect of the whole catalytic process, and even more so on a rotary.
There is not enough energy in the oil to cause a visible glow - if you think about it, an ounce of oil in 100+ ounces of gasoline would not make much difference - it is the pig-rich mixture that makes 'em glow. You could ease your mind by running a tank of straight gas, but it's guaranteed you will get the same result.

universal?!
r u sure? i know and got used to knowing this car runs hot... too hot on a 1.3 for its own good. but the glow is universal huh? i guess i have only recently been looking and monitoring too closely on the exhaust system during night time or in the dark.
maybe i'm just frustrated that i have to deal with finding out how to fix the car myself and not much of the mazda dealership offer much on their part. not all...but haven't found one here in so-cal yet. and being thats the case, here on the club forums i find more generosity in a helping hand for those of same interest.
i now find the value being a forum member.
is there a saluting emoticon or whatever its called? well, salutations!

Lucas to 2-stroke- initial impressions
I ran through my bottle of Lucas UCL and my last fill up was without any type of premix after a month or more using the UCL. The difference was very noticeable. When I first starting using the UCL I thought the "smoother" engine was just in my mind. Nope. After running a tank without it I can say that my engine is noticeably harsher now and the marbles/sand in a can/blender that I thought was gone came back.
I was running 4-6oz of Lucas UCL. During that time I don't recall hearing the sand in a blender sound and the engine felt less rough all around. I'm a bit surprised because the sand in a blender noise shouldn't be related to this (at least not from what I read here), but it does seem to be tied into it for me.
I was a bit annoyed the other day when me engine just seemed to rev so rough and I kept getting the sand in a blender sound. I've ordered Idemitsu but it hasn't arrived yet so I went to Advance Auto Parts to buy some 2 stroke oil. They usually don't have anything decent, but this time they had 2.4oz bottles of something called "MaxPower". It's JASO <SP?> certified, smokeless and full synthetic. I poured 2 bottles in with my last fillup- it's blue which is wierd.
I put about 100 miles on the car since then and my initial impressions are very good. The engine is running VERY smooth and the sand in a blender is either completely gone or so quiet I can't hear it. The car feels like it's SUPPOSED to feel IMO. Seems the same, maybe slightly better than the UCL. I'm quite surprised actually. I want to run through this tank and repeat the same procedure at a different gas station, but my fingers are crossed that the results will be the same. If so, my motor is in heaven and so am I.
Can't wait for my Idemitsu to get here. Based on what Jax is recommending I may run 4oz if Idemitsu with 2 oz of FP60. Possibly just the Idemitsu though as I routinely run the engine to it's upper limits hopefully keeping the carbon buildup to a minimum.

4 oz of oil is pretty much useless. Any effect you noticed is purely placebo.
8 oz is minimum for any real effect and 10 to 12 oz are for maximum streetable volume. 18 oz or so is where you start to max out the dilution to a point where it starts to adversely affect stuff.

Additionally, the engine has a course sound at higher revs. It doesn't when I use the UCL or 2-stroke. I need to try different gas stations and gather a lot more data- but so far the premix sure has seemed to help. Maybe it's because my engine is new and not in bad shape to begin with so there are no problems to mask?
Didn't you post somewhere else earlier that adding 6oz of premix made your engine run smoother?

i'm just using any 2 stroke oil. at a minimum of tcwIII from what ever recommended that someone approved of or whatnot.
crh: not really sure whats currently in the tank, i just blended all the bottles together. but the primary color is blue from what i know of although it got darker from the other oils. think the majority of it is a valvoline brand...? but sure would like to hear when mazdatrix comes thru with idemitsu premix. then i may stick to a regular over the counter brand and blend it with idemitsu once its available. i'm only doing this blend to cut down on the overall cost off running pure idemitsu on a otherwise new engine seeing street time only, but still like my baby too run on the best ish.
