The quart I ordered back in September showed up. I'm interested to see the difference between Idemitsu and Protek-R. I've got both now so I"ll see if I can do a side by side comparo. It may be tough though since I drive so infrequently and erratically.

Uhh… think I'll pass.
Mazda made a lot of compromise on Rx-8's OMP lubrication. the old Rx7 was a bit better. but the Rx-8's default design ... I guess it has a lot to do with emission requirements.

Im keeping my Idemitsu, car runs smoother with it. so why not ?

I'd be curious to know the statistics on how many people with blown motors did or did not pre-mix.

I'm inclined, based on who I know here in Phoenix that does and doesn't premix, that the amount who do pre-mix yet blew a motor are slim to none.

Assuming that were true, I think that would be all the proof in the world you would need.

You'll never know. As it is, this board represents a miniscule fraction of 8 owners worldwide; and only a small fraction of those here premix.

the gas price already sky rocket. Just did a fill up 30 minutes ago and it cost me what 45 bux ? a bottle of Idemitsu is like 5 bux. I use 8 oz a time so thats about 1/4 of the bottle. thats a little more than a dollar ? so why not ?

like savedsol said. this borad probably represent like what, 1/10000 of the Rx8 owners. and 1/2 of those 1/10000 on the board barely shows up on the forum.

Got a phone message that the Idemitsu premix I ordered last week has already shipped, so it looks like there is no wait time now. Mazdatrix must have received a shipment so they are now able to fill all backorders and probably new orders as well.

Wow, that was a long read.

So I think I'm going to try the premix as well. Car seems to run well, and has pretty low miles (04 with 40k km [25k mi], owned it for 3 mos) but I keep cars for a long time, so I want to make sure this one lasts.
I know a guy who is an Amsoil dealer, so I'm planning on the Sauber Pro premix.
There wasn't too much info on the cold weather issues. I'm another guy in the -30C [approx -30F] temp range.
Anyone mix the Amsoil with a cleaner (necessary?) and/or use it in the deep freeze temps?

Next - conventional engine oil vs synthetic (hopefully less than 29 pages, but not optimistic)

Since I upgraded my flash a few weeks back my exhaust, sans cat, smells like a Toro snowblower while it is running. It was never that bad(good?) before. Plus, my oil consumption is higher than it used to be. I am doubting that pre-mixing with the most recent flash is necessary. When I went on a few long roads trips recently, I used to see a 3 mpg(+/-) difference between pre-mix and no pre-mix. Now I get the same 23-24 mpg without pre-mix.

If you only read the first 29 pages, and the last 29 pages you will miss a lot of the "discussion".

What flash did you upgrade to? What were you running previously?

128:1 pre-mix, no particular oil worth mentioning and the Sohn Adapter with some esoteric 2-stroke in the tank. I haven't pre-mixed for the past few tanks.

anyone get a CEL as a result of using premix?

i've been using penzoil marine for the past 3 tanks and the car is running great. gas milage has gone up and the engine feels all around more smooth.

problem now is that i have a CEL but i don't think it's related. i got the car with 28k on the clock and have had it for around 1000 miles. took it to the auto-x yesterday and the CEL came on after the first run. popped a code reader on it and it wouldn't link up so i have no idea what the code it from. i've driven it about 50 miles since then and it hasn't gone off. i'm not going to clear it out until i have it read at the dealership this afternoon. i just want to make sure it's not a result of the premix.

btw, i'm using 4 ounces of premix per fill up. i generally let the fuel light come on before refueling. 4 ounces / 13 gallons +/-.

I don't think that anyone has had a CEL related to running pre-mix.

Don't forget that the reader has to be CAN compliant. An OBD II scanner will plug in but will not be recognized.

that may be the issue with the reader. i wasn't aware that a standard OBDII reader was not compatable.

i'm honestly thinking it's a misfire code but we'll see.

if its misfire, you should see blinking CEL 2 times before it stays

and most likely it has nothing to do with your premix.

I used Penzoil Marine for 2 tanks b4 no issue.

Using Idemitsu right now for the past hmm maybe 100 tanks.

^= Yes, the misfire will blink before it remains lit, but if he was driving autox he probably wasn't paying much attention to the dash I get a misfire occasionally at high RPMs. It goes away pretty quick though. Just get a CAN compliant scanner before taking it to the dealer if you're worried, but they have no way to know that you premix anyway...

bingo. it's still under the bumper to bumper warranty so the only thing i'm worried about are the plugs being fouled. that would suck. anything esle should be covered under warranty.
