getting charged for msp16???

i have a 04 with 36k. i called my local dealor (202 miles away.) and they said that the msp16 recall was gonna cost $88 to have it checked out. and if any problems were found, they would do the computer flash for free. or just pay $88 to have it reflashed without them checking for problems.... does this sound right?

tell them you are experiencing loss of power after driving for 20 minutes.

thats bs they shouldtn charge you.. seems to me like they just want to make a quick 88 bucks.. i took mine in with like 45K miles and i told my service advisor if i could get the latest relash done..

He said i thinky our up to date but ill check to see if thiers any more updated available.. calls me up and says they did the reflash..

my brake pads were 50% worn and since they were squeeling they went ahead and replaced at no charge =]]

I had my msp-16 done today, and the dealer said nothing about "checking for problems". They just did the flash, and I left.

Can they actually DX. things during the reflash??

BTW, my pads are squealing too on my 05 with 22,700 miles. Should I ask for replacements? Since when do dealers replace pads--for free? Is there some type of warranty parameter for pads wearing/squeaking??

are you still under factory warranty? if not thats the only reason they should charge you for a campaign...(msp16 is not a mandatory recall) its a vin specific campaign that is valid through your emission warranty which is 84 months or 70,000 miles if its outside of those terms then thats the reason other than that they either are not informed yet correctly or are douche bags...

yea mine were squeeling and when i braught them in to check them out my service advisor said that they could have just put some brake cleaner and some thing to minimize the squeeling but since i was almost out of warranty to save me some money they just went ahead and replaced them before i was out of warranty.. at 50K miles i think

If they arent worn down METAL TO METAL go in and get them checked out.. but this is like the 4th time ig et them replaced for free because of squeeling.. my advisor just says a new updated pad is out and bam they replace them..

Its always good to be nice to your service guys lol the guy already knows my name when i call the shop up.

Im schedules @ 45K to get my coolant flushed and what not.. im gonna get my passanger visor replaced and my middle console since its all loose.. and im gonna talk to him about my front headlight my right side is all hazey im gonna get that replaced

The dealer is giving you a line of bull ****. It is a recall not a TSB. They have to do it. I am out of warranty and just got the reflash done the other day free of charge. I would call Mazda North America and ask them about the reflash and if it should be done for free. And when they say yes it it free then tell them that the dealer wanted to charge you 88 dollars

MSP16 IS FREE ! This has been confirmed.

So your dealership just ripped you off.

Tell them to give you your money back, or you will go sue them in small claims court for all the trouble that they've cost you.

So is it that brakes squealing is actually covered under the warranty, or that you are one of the few lucky ones that actually has a decent dealer service dept.? BTW...I sense sarcasm!

I had my rotors and pads resurfaced when I took my car in for the squeeling issue. No free brake pads.

The tech also reflashed me according to MSP16.

Easy and sweet.

Again, is this a warranty coverage issue, or a customer service oriented dealership issue?

MSP16 is free to all rx8's built from 4/10/03-11/9/07, straight from mazda:

"Mazda Motor Corporation has decided to conduct a Mazda Service Program (MSP) on 2004-
2008 RX-8 vehicles built from April 10, 2003 through November 9, 2007.

Certain 2004-2008 RX-8 vehicles may experience a lack of engine power and/or low/rough
engine idle speed in high ambient temperatures.

Please perform MSP16 on all applicable vehicles in dealer inventory and when owners bring
their vehicles in for regularly scheduled maintenance or other service work. Please explain to
the customer that the powertrain control module is reprogrammed free of charge. "

you SHOULD NOT be paying anyone, anything for MSP16, ever.

kevin.

Sorry, I meant the brake squaealing issue--not the reflash. Sorry to skew the thread topic for a second.

$91.84 paid for MSP 16

How many people have paid for a software update? I called Mazda twice hoping to get my money back. They told me tough luck you are out of warranty. My four years were up 2/28/08. If they found a loss of power it would have been covered. One hour of labor to check for problem though. I seem to be the only one that has paid for this. I never got close to a carbon clean, over $120.

Forget about Carbon clean, u can do that at home urself with just basic hand tools (see my DIY)

but Recall flash should be free. Its Recall now. so its free. read Kevin (teknics's) post. He works at Mazda dealership. so he knows.

I guess there are tons of dealerships out there trying to get some quick cash from this.

My repair invoice lists MSP16 as a recall and there was no charge, but I'm in warranty still.

i talked to a customer sevice rep from mazda north america today, and he said that a dealership can choose to charge for it if they want to, and that i would just have to find one that didnt charge. he said that if they think the car has lack of power, that they should do it for free, but if they think it runs fine with no problems they will charge for the diagnostic, and not even do the reflash.

I brought mine in for a oil change($24) and they did it N/C. It says do it for the customer when they bring it in for service.

How is that a recall? My understanding of recalls is that they are not optional, and that the cost if borne by the manufacturer.

Just had my 27k 04 flashed today with the msp16. It is listed on my invoice as a recall. No charge and the car is out of warranty.
