Getting a new engine under warranty :) and the road to it...
#27
Collected car from the dealer this morning, new engine, starter, cat, coils, plugs - only had a quick trip to work but my god this car is now a beast!!! Think she's been tailing off on power for a while now - hard to notice when it's spread out over a year or so. Gobshite dealer managed to put several scratches on the wheel arch and engine cover during the process but they seem to have polished out - You'd think with over €7000 worth of work they would at least look after your car... Anyhoo, this weekend is gonna see some serious tyre burning :D
As a point of interest how long should an engine change take? Dealer suposedly spent 11 hours doing mine...

11.6 is warranty time for automatic.
doesnt mean thats how long it took, thats sorta like the tech's time window to finish it in before the job becomes unprofitable for the tech.

well done man, very pleased for you.
that was alot of work, but atleast you have all new engine, coils, etc.
just keep an eye on the oil the first couple of jaunts out, and the old speed lol.
the unthinkable happened to me with my mazda mx3 (autozam az3 jap import)
last wednesday. i went to the gym after work and car drove fine from work to gym, about a mile away. a few hours after my workout i got in and started the car, which always fires first time, and got nothing, so tried again, and again nothing.
this went on for a few times, even got halfords guys to help bump start but nothing, so ended up getting towed home by my father in his 6 cylinder merc.
we had stopped at our mechanic's garage cause it was about 11pm and his yard was open. i decided to try the car again, and it kicked into life, so after much head scratching etc, we decided to drive on home. i got to three miles away and car stopped again at a junction, luckly we live in the country so not much traffic. car wouldn't start, my brother in law tried taking the coil ignitor lead out of the distributor cap and put it on the engine head to see if there was a spark, but nothing.
so got towed home last few miles, bro in law said try it again in the morning and he bet it would start, which i did and he was correct. so ignition coil seemed to be burning out or over heating.
i got one off ebay, 5 minute job, two nuts to take off, disconnect coil lead and plastic plug, then reverse with the new ignition coil.
car started first time again, so let her run over for about 10 mins no problems, switched off and restarted, no problems. going to take her for a run tomorrow and see how she goes, but i was devestated as car is 17 years old and has never broken down on me for the 6 years i have owned her.
but the good news was i got to drive my rx-8 for an extra day
there is 241000 km on my az3, if only the rx8 will do that lol, we shall see.

What you mean you had your rx8 for an 'extra day'?

yeah my dad knows a man who has a 323 and has about 250000 miles on it, his wife has another one with about 150000, and it keeps on driving.
a real credit to mazda.
i meant i got to drive my 8 3 days instead of monday and friday, monday to cheer myself up its the start of another week at work!
friday because its the last day of work for the week, yippee.
so might as well have something to enjoy driving home
i have been driving my 8 all this week so far as i changed the ignition coil ok in the az3 and it drove 6 miles into town and back ok, just wanna make sure its ok before i do the bigger mileage, but did join the RAC incase, as £150 to get towed off the motorway and membership £105 for house calls and towing anywhere etc for any car. so will be useful in case anything happens again in any car i am driving or passenger.
so enjoying driving the 8 this week, didn't use much oil so far but driving well, i am on 132 miles and the fuel needle is 2 notches above the half mark, so gonna see if i can get 300 miles out of a full tank this week.
but hope the new engine is going well.
all the best
