Which grease do you use for tranny work ?
You know, Im planning to do clutch. and u need grease for certain parts like on the throwout bearing and stuff.
I got a bottle of mobil1 b4. I left it in my garage upside down. today I found that, the can, thats sealed like a can food, actually LEAKED and its all over the floor ... well I have no idea why but I guess that can of grease is *trashed*.
Just wonder whats good. and Im sure no one has ever asked this question b4.
Thanks

molybdenum iirc.
dunno whats a best brand if thats what ur askin. but for sure not anti-seize. even anti-seize with its name...still cakes and hardens onto the plug threads.
i'm sure there's actually something stronger and lasts longer...just can't think of what it is right now. many of times on an overhaul, the stuff comes with the kit.
might just wanns ask what they like to use at the shop...many techs like to mix and come up with their own witch brew.

o, then again white lithium grease is also used alot for many places where its called for.
its an easy answer to find when you're ready to do the job. i'm sure the label will indicate the proper places for the type of grease when you're ready to get down with it, so rest assured if no-one can give you a straight answer on here.

The shop manual doesn't seem to be much help. They show a number of places to apply grease. One spot where they show the grease symbol they say "Petroleum jelly" next to it. In the text, they say to apply "clutch grease" to the splines.
If you're going to use something generic at pivot points, I'd use moly chassis grease. But I would really recommend that you contact whoever you bought the clutch from. I presume you bought something good from a specialty maker.

^^+1. like mentioned above, moly grease seems to be real good. i personally throw in moly to mix in with anti-seize. it sticks real well to the metal and doesn't cake as easy.
but then again...white lith may be good too, just don't get them that much as they don't come with factory brake pad kits.
if moly is used in brake parts and can withstand the high temps...i think they should hold up well. they better...we do use our brakes more than anything right?

i see white lith used more on door jambs, shock components, hinges, etc... don't see much heat challenged situations. but always good to look for any temp labels if buying those type of lubricants.
knowledge is important. and double the importance when its YOUR car. so get the best and you're prolly only spending a $1 more for something you'll never finish using, than 4-5 bottles of inferior grease and lubes... just my .2 cent
good luck anyways

Money is not really an *issue* to me, I can afford the clutch .... I think I can effort the few extra *bux* for good grease ...
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ic_Grease.aspx
Mobil1 - I got it in a can, suppose to be *sealed* but for some *Reason*, I left the can upside down in my garage and it all leaked out ... so I dont think the can seal was actually good in the first place. I have doubt about their quality cuz, if they cant even seal their can right, how could I trust them ? Not to mention Im not even sure if this is the right *stuff* to use for tranny work (throwout bearings and stuff)

if I remember correctly, last time when I did my clutch at the shop, they used some white looking grease on the bearings. Damn I should've paid attention to the exactly name on the bottle. ahh well. Im searching on summitracing.com right now see if I can find anything useful.

Info on their web site makes me more than a little suspicious of that Valvoline grease.
The recommend it for wheel bearings and for general chassis lube. Having lubed chassis (yes, I'm that old) and greased wheel bearings, I cannot believe that one grease is suitable for both.
They say it does not meet Ford warranty requirements. A product that's not good enough to use on a Ford???
Really - check with your clutch supplier. Or go to a real parts store and ask for clutch grease. If you use too thick a grease on the splines, it will be gummy. Too thin and it's likely to sling off and contaminate the disk.

^^ i 2nd that. but looking at the valvoline, it does mention both moly and lith. both good stuff and sticks well.
so like i said, techs often just mix this stuff. why waste? its good lube.
and the white thing you mentioned... you talking about the white lithium grease?

not to hijack but would white lithium grease be good for the sunroof rails? I've done the TSB and now it's squeaking again.
