Angry Grinding Gears

are grinding gears covered under our warranty??
3rd gear keeps grinding and it's driving me crazy!
it goes in smoothly but it makes a crunching noise most of the time when it gets in there.
i always had a hard time getting my 8 into 3rd when i first got the car & i'm guessing i must have damaged something (synchro possibly). can anyone shed some light on what it could be & how i can get it fixed?? thanks...
i searched but only found info on a bulletin issued for problems w/ 2nd gear on older 8's.

take it to the dealer. i took mine in for grinding 2nd and 3rd, they ended up replacing most of the internals.

ok gonna take it in. so, as long as they can duplicate the grinding, they'll fix it?

Its not the transmission, its the clutch line. Get them to swap clutch lines to a MS stainless steel and also have them perform the clutch release cleaning.. Its a TSB..

i don't think it has anything to do w/ the clutch. i'm positive it has all to do w/ the gears...

My 8 is geting the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros and a bent shift forks done right now. They also replaced my clutch. It wasnt worn out but it looked like it got hot, so I was told. No charge to me. Only 28000kms on it.

I have big problems with my 4th gear. Can't shift fast becausse then it schratches badly and take say 1 sec to get engaged! I have Motuls new 75W-140 trans oil in gearbox.

No wonder you can't shift - 75W140 is way to thick for any climate. The thickest you should use is a 75W-90 GL-4 gear oil and you could probably do a thinner 70W80 in Sweden's cool climate.

I use a GL-4 70W80 (BG Syncroshift II) in VA area of the US and it works great. Make sure you use a good GL-4 only gear oil and try to avoid GL-5/GL-4 combo oils as the GL-5 additives are more for differentials and are not so good with transmission syncros.

you really have a whole other problem, dude. i don't know why u put that weight in your box...
anyways, i'm gonna take it in soon & see what they can do... would this be a good time to have them install a flywheel? or would i get raped regardless of the warranty work being done???

they have to pull the tranny to fix it, so you shouldnt be charged much if anything to get the flywheel installed. i had mine in last year for some tranny work, they had to pull the clutch because they were covering it under warranty, and they threw the flywheel in for just the price of the flywheel.

Just got mine back for the dealer. They replaced 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears and synchros. Plus the clutch assembly. Shifts smooth so far.

Now my slave is leaking. 50km drive home and the reservoir is half full. Big puddle on the garage floor. Going back tomorrow.

glad to hear they replaced those internals! Did they ever fix the leak?

(haha, nothing like bringing back threads from the dead...)
