Question Hard Shifting 1st to 2nd

Hey guys help. I have have 1k miles on my 8 and shifting has been fine thru all the gears, but since I reached 1k I thought I would push it just alittle. I have noticed that when I shift at about 7-7500 it's hard to shift from 1st to 2nd all the other gears are fine not perfect but not like 1st to 2nd.. Should I switch to syn trans oil or redline or does the the car need to have afew more miles on it to wear in more, Please Help

Sometimes your synchros in your transmission are out on a particular gear, I had the same problem with a civic I bought a couple years ago. Didn't notice it until you put more pressure on the gear box and tranny.

Anyways, ittok it back to the dealership and they replaced a few parts and it was perfect

I had hard shifting from 1st to 2nd, and they changed the fluid. Helped for awhile, and now I am having trouble from 3rd to 4th. What is up with this transmission?

Now, is the RX8 a true 6-speed?, or a modified 5-speed from the Miata?

I'm not sure the answer to your question, but I found this on a website:

This 6speed is the same transmission that is shared in the Miata and Nissan 240SX (Silvia in Japan), so it has a proven track record of reliability and performance. I was very impressed overall with the car, although I'm not sure if 6th gear was really needed but for highway cruising (though it is supposed to be a close ratio gearbox) as I was only doing around 3200 in 5th gear at 65 mph.

I read somewhere on the forum about this added 6th gear, now if I can just remember...

Here it is: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...9&page=1&pp=15

I am having a blast driving this car, but I am nervous of the tranny. I even let one of my best friends drive it the other day who owns several 911's and he even said something just did not feel right with the shift. Was not as smooth as it could be. Oh well, I still am on my first tranny, so hopefully it will last.

I've had two 911's. The RX-8 tranny does feel a bit weird, but I chalk that up to:

- rotary engine is different
- gearing has to take into account the wide rpm the engine allows - almost any speed there are 3 gears you could be in.

My shifter can feel "notchy" at times, I'm going to be doing a redline fluid swap soon, hopefully that'll make it smooth.

I see Redline in my immediate future also.

Rotoman, did you change to Redline yet?

Nemesis8, I have not changed trans oil yet, but will be thursday when I bring 8 in for the
M Flash, I bought the Redline MT-90 and will have dealer install also. I will report later how the car feels with the M Flash and the Redline 90, Hopefully it will be shifting better between 1st and 2nd at the higher RPMs.

btw why would it make a difference if a tranny was a "true 6speed" as opposed to one that was originally built as a 5speed and then the 6th was added? it's just an evolution in the design it 's not like that had a bunch of 5speeds sitting on the shelf and then wedged another gear in the casing and installed them on our cars. these were built as 6speeds. it's like saying the 13b-msp is somehow inferior because it's really just a 13b-rew with some holes drilled in different places.

LOL :D

I don't know, I thought I would just throw that out there to see what you would say I guess. My tranny seems to be calming down lately, maybe it's finding peace with it's driver finally.

I called the service manager about this the first day I had the car. It's most prominent when the car is cold; once the tranny fluid gets up to temp, the shifts come more naturally.

Since my day at the track, the 2-3 shift has been showing the same kind of symptoms. I'm supposed to drive Thunderhill Friday and Saturday, but I'm not feeling as confident as two weeks ago.

I notice the car likes to shift smoothly if I let the engine spin up just a bit after disengaging the clutch, move the shifter briskly (but not forcibly) through the gate, then come back with clutch and power promptly. If I baby the clutch, it's very hard to get that smooth application of power in the next gear.

Does that hurt the tranny when the gears grind a couple of times

Nemesis8, Just wanted to udate you and anyone else interested in my report after I had installed MT-90 . Well first off my car took all of the 2qts, ( I thought it to be 1.8qts no big deal). But I have to tell anyone interested it does make a difference, the 1st and 2nd shifts at 7-7500rpms are easier and also the remaining shifts are also better, I'am glad I switched..
