heat shield rattle question
I have this terrible rattle and had it checked out last time the oil was changed. Mechanic at Sears auto (not a rotary expert) told me it was my heat shield. He just hit it and it rattled. It was hanging down partially on 1 side. He offered to rip it off and said that he sees this all the time on cars and that you could just rip them off without any problem, I said no.
My question is can you remove the heat shield on the 8 without any problems. I figure with the heat coming from our exhaust we need the shield more that other cars. He also mentioned that it could be welded back on. By the way I had just had a supercat put on her about a month before the rattle came.

Most heat shields are a waste of space and metal. I remember a friend of mine who had a Mark VII and it had something like 50 heat shields on it. You could be safe in just ripping it off depending on it's location.
You came to the right place to ask questions. I am sure somebody here will give you a more definite answer.
If not try flrx8club.net or cflrx8club.com. There are some very knowledgeable people on those sites.

The rotary runs pretty hot. If you rip off the headshield, say, from the header, such that the header is directly exposed to the bottom, then you run a higher risk of setting grass on fire (if you park on grass after driving for a while).

I think you're talking about the heat shield from the Last last last's recall.
You might want to find a way to "secure it back" to the way it was. Cuz its there to protect the fuel lines/tank from exhaust's heat.
