Question help mazdaspeed

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,
I have an rx8 197 hp, Im interested in purchusing a mazdaspeed flywheel, can any one give me some feedback please. Does it make a difference in accelaration? Do I have to change any other parts as well if I add the flywheel? What else can I add to improve my accelaration? But please keep in mind I can only use mazdaspeed parts or else I will lose my warranty. Thank you..

you're not going to do much with your automatic 8. acceleration is not the 8's strong point to begin with, and paired with the auto tranny and lack of true redline, it's hardly a straightline beast and never will be.

sell the car, learn to drive stick and buy the manual.

First of all the AT has a fairly light flywheel to begin with so there is not a replacement out there that is going to be any lighter than what you already have. If you want to improve your acceleration times about the only thing you can do is:
1. Go on a diet
2. Get lighter Wheels. (my old AT had the 16" wheels and tires that weighed 40lbs a piece). You could possibly shave 10lbs per wheel if you bought lightweight racing wheels.
3. Get a lighter exhaust.
4. Replace your strut tower brace with Mazdaspeed's carbon fiber wrapped one.
5. If all else fails then trade in for a certified pre-owned MT and reap the benefits of a 100k mile warranty like I just did!!

It's amazing how little some people know about engines, transmissions and how they work. It's even more amazing when those same people respond to a ridiculous question with an even more ridiculous answer. Automatic transmissions use flexplates not flywheels......and yes, flexplates are very light

While people are trying to bash the guy, if he is outside the US he may have the 5spd 4port engine.

True. The original question may have been valid to the 5-speed MT application....but the answer that was given about the AT having a very light flywheel was ridiculous. If you don't know.....don't answer. These forums are meant to pool knowledge from those that have some....not for any moron to chime in about something they obviously have no knowledge about. I can boost my post count by responding the every thread also....but that would not be value-added to the person asking the question.

did'nt mean to dissapoint anyone

I did'nt mean to disapoint anyone, I'm from belgium and have a 5 speed manual transmission 197 bhp engine, I'm interested in ordering a mazdaspeed flywheel from the usa since they don't sell them here to increase my accleration. If anyone can give me some feed back on there experiences, it would be very much appreciated. The reason I'm going for a mazdaspeed flywheel is because I can only keep my wornthy if I use mazdaspeed parts.

The lightweight flywheel will help improve acceleration the same as lightweight pullies, clutch, brake rotors, or wheels/tires would. Any reduction in rotating mass will help to a degree. How much? I don't know...

Well before trouncing someone about semantics, you should know that:

The flywheel for most automatic transmissions/transaxles is simply a stamped-steel disc with a ring gear located at the outer edge for engagement with the starter’s pinion gear. With this type of flywheel, the torque converter has no ring gear. Some cars use a more modest flywheel known as a flexplate, which is all that’s needed because the torque converter itself has a ring gear located on its outer edge.

In other words, a flexplate is a flywheel, and yes they are very light.
