help needed - rattling noise under passanger foot well/dash
Hi,
Just purchased a 05 mazda RX8. The passanger side, either in the dash or behind the glove box, when the car vibrates (say over a bump) a very annoying squeek occurs.
I had a look at the back of the glovebox and can see an air blower and plenty of wires.
Before I investigate deeper, has anyone else had this issue?
I have tried searching the forum and havent found anything as yet.
Any help would be welcomed.

Well, try reading through this thread and see if you spot anything while I do some more specific searches.

thanks, I have found this description using your search, its the same issue:
"I now have a rattle that sounds metallic coming from the front passenger area. Sounds like it's behind the glovebox. It doesn't happen all the time, only on certain bumps and certain days, moon phases, etc. But like all rattles, it's driving me insane. Best description would be to say it sounds like loose change rattling (it's not). Can't seem to find it."
but I can't find the solution on here :-(

Okay.....are you sure it's bumps that cause this or does it happen mainly when you are at higher RPMs in any gear and the as it(or you) shifts it goes away until high RPMs again? You first defined it as a squeek but let's make sure.
Why I'm asking is to see if it's not really MIAC(Marbles In A Can).
That's a different story and need you to be sure about when it occurs.
You can search MIAC if it's possible that this is more what it sounds like, when it happens, and not just a squeek.

Phew...at least it's not MIAC.
Okay, so it is bumps......yes, it could be the glovebox itself.
I assume you have nothing in it making the rattle?
Can you have someone ride with you and try to hold the glovebox, or more importantly really try and pin point where it's coming from?
There are some door rattles I've read about that might seem to come from that footwell area.
What would happen if you drove around with it open.........is the rattle still there?
What if you closed it with a cloth on either side of the latch? Just things to consider trying to attempt to locate it.

You're welcome and good luck.
If I find anything as I'm poking around on the site tonight, I'll let you know here.
Oh......might want to re-read my last post above.......I edited it with a couple of ideas you might not have seen.

I usually don't admit this to anyone, but when I had a noise like that in my Integra, I went with the mechanic on the test drive to show him the noise. He got a quizzical look on his face, stopped the car, got out, reached under the seat... and pulled out a can of window de-icer that was rolling around under there. I would've bet my house that the noise was coming from the engine compartment.

I zoom therefore I am.
might be something in there that dislodges during a bump and then hits the fan? or the fan's bearing is bad and the bump causes it to touch the side?
