The Coils are at the other end of the plug wires PHOTO The basic way you would know if they were bad is poor performance or they look damaged.

it will go a lot easier if you pull the intake box out

I dont agree completely that a performance difference is so completely obvious. I had two bad coils (one for each rotor) and didn't notice any major loss of power. I only noticed a slightly rough idle and black plugs. I checked the coils with a multimeter to see that they were bad. No burn spots on mine, contrary to what has been reported.

Note, TeamRX8 has a post noting an error in a early PDF version of the rx8 service manual.

Is it possible to pull the coils with the intake box inplace? From what I remember, pulling it would be a requirement.

Or is this classic Team understatement?

you CAN do it without pulling the intake but it is a lot easier if you do so.

You don't need to pull the airbox, just the accordion. Take out the strut bar first.

for some reason I have a hard time pulling that with the airbox in and I have it down to where it's so easy to pop the box out without even unhooking the MAF wiring that for me it's a no-brainer

I just did a search for "bad coils" and found this....

My car wont start... again...

The first time it was because it flooded, they gave me the upgraded starter and 2 new spark plugs....

Now it wont start again... and I when I take out a plug and hold it close I get no blue arc so I am thinking the coils are bad???

I have no idea.

Never fear, Jedi is here! I did this 2 weeks ago and have been meaning to post pics:

Take out the accordian:

Now you've got a clear sight of the coil packs. Get a ratchet, 12 inch extension, and a 14 mm socket and go at it.

Here's a pic of the new coil packs with new RB wires.

There is no "single" ground wire.
Each coil has a separate ground wire that travels through the harness, goes by the PCM and is hooked to one of the chassis ground blocks.

Kev.....the ground for the coils ties into the bracket at the top of the rear of the engine behind the oil filter area......

Actually, the coil ground is under the intake manifold, just behind the alternator (straight down under the oil filler cap). Its a 12mm bolt (with yellow paint on my car) and holds two wires directly to the engine block.
It is labled "19" in this drawing.
Power to the coils comes from a "condenser" which is, essentially, a capacitor.

I have dissected and redone the ground for the harness...the harness grounds attach behind the condenser.....onto the plate at the rear top of the engine....

Here is ground position "19" where the coils are actually connected:
