How does the oil level sensor work?

I am adding a Sohn adaptor and separate oil tank to my car and would like to wire the level sensor in my 2-stroke tank to work with the stock oil level warning light. Ideally I would like to retain the stock level sensor so that if either the 2-stroke oil or engine oil is low it will turn on the light.

Has anybody had the oil pan off and looked at how the sensor works? I am assuming it is just a float that completes a electrical circuit when the float is too low and sends 12v to the light...but you know what they say about assuming.

Thank you!

I did some experimenting and found that the oil warning light illuminates when the oil level sensor is unplugged, so that blows my theory out of the water. my new plan is to get an extra male and female plug that match the level sensor and use them and a normally closed relay to make the car think the sensor is unplugged when the level in my 2 stroke tank drops and the switch in the tank makes contact. I have the tank and Sohn adaptor installed and it is working great! For now I'm just keeping a close eye on the oil level in the tank.

what's the point ?

Just add 2-stoke to the tank every 2-3 fill ups ... not that hard right ?

I never looked at the sensor on my 8. but I think it's the same as the one in FC and the one in FC is just a float(really small one)

Point is, if he can, it's one less thing to have to keep an eye on. The oil level sensor is a ground to PCM continuity connection. Neat idea you have, but it may just be easier to purchase a normally closed level sensor and run it inline with one of the wires from the oil level sensor.

I'm mostly interested in having the idiot light as a back up. I plan to check the tank level every fill-up any way, but I have heard of people using a quart of oil very quickly when tracking for example. I plan to do some auto-x and perhaps a track day this summer and would like to have a warning if I go through my oil faster than expected.

Redlined, that would defiantly be the easiest option, but I think I would have a hard time finding a new level sensor for my chinese moped tank I am using for my 2 stroke reservoir.
