How to tell the difference between HP and LP engines?

Hi

Just wondering if there is a way to confirm that the engine in an RX-8 is infact a high power version and not a low-power one.

Any visual signs?
Any method of checking this?

Just wanted to know, because I am curious and clueless

That seemes to be just about correct (I googled the port thing).
But, can you (or me, being engine-challenged at best) actually see that "that's a 4-porter" and "that's a 6 porter" in an easy way, just by peeking into the engine-bay of a random RX-8...?

The reason I am asking, is this would be a nice thing to know if you are looking at ie. used cars, to avoid being ripped off, or if you need a new engine and want to make sure you are still HP after the engine swap.

This may be very mundane and stupid questions for people with knowledge though, I hope they'll bare with me.

4spd auto and 5spd manuals are 4 port
6spd auto and 6spd manuals are 6 port
as far as the engine bay...there are quite a few things that are different but, ill wait for some one else to chime in...wouldnt wanna lead you wrong

Mod Note: This answer is correct for A-Spec cars only. The poster is from Norway.

If you were in North America, the answer would be easy. There are valves that open and close the additional 2 ports. I don't remember what they are called at the moment. You would look for them.
The European Forum would have more experience handling this type of question.

The intake manifolds look drastically different...there is no APV motor on a 4 port also...
