I'm sorry, I'm wrong

Ehhh... Dude if you really want it and read all the new owners threads then go for it. My first engine lasted to 120k, some people last about 30k, some a few days.
If you really want an 8 I would shoot for a 2006-08.
Getting an 04 is not the best idea, transmission was junk and a few other little things that they ironed out later.

I tried searching on google and can't find anything to verify that.
I know they use the same transmission as the mx-5 in the S2.
I think the only major upgrades between 04-06 is standard stuff like keyless entry, the flashes that fixed the issues of the previous models, sat radio, and all the shinka goodies.

The shinka subframe never made it to the s1 s2 got it though, not sure what other goodies you are talking about. In 05 or 06 they moved the breather line from the accordion to the LIM...
I'm not 100% on the trans I might be thinking of a different car, Infact it seems I was wrong!

It took me a year and a half and 5 track days to read what the suspension was doing on my 07 6spd auto (yes) GT.
I got a alignment with me helping ( about -1.65 camber all around with slight toe out up front and slight toe in in the rear).
I also put in BHR coils and fuel pump which are things that go bad, and you'll see you need soon to keep engine alive.
I run Hankook Ventus v12 225/40r18 with 46 psi front and 43 psi rear hot, and on a drizzly track day, nobody was faster in any high performance car.
So my 8 is fun, fast enough, durable, and way better than an untuned 8.
That's enough for me.
