Installation/replacement of clutch + flywheel

Simple question that I can't seem to find the answer to: do you need to drain/change or add transmission oil as any part of replacing the clutch assembly and flywheel+counterweight? I'm bringing these parts to a shop, and I don't know if I'll need to bring him a few quarts of Redline MTL also. (the fluid does not really need changing, so I'm hoping its not related).

I think the answer is no, but I read that you have to remove the driveshaft to do this, and that if you remove the driveshaft, you have to drain the oil too? Just want to be sure before I drop $40 on oil necessarily...

thanks!

If you pull-out the driveshaft, the transmission fluid can run out the tail end (where the driveshaft is inserted).
If you keep the transmission level, you technically don't need to drain the oil.

For your question : Yes, you have to remove the driveshaft to remove the Tranny, and you have to remove the tranny to do the clutch/fw (lol)

As for the fluid change, hmm, you can bring them a "super clean" container to catch all the fluid out of the drain hole. and use them again after the install BUT, you are going to spend couple hundred bux to drop the tranny and stuff, MIGHT as well get some new fluid. Thats what I do.

you just need about 2 quarts of MT-90.

too bad im out of space & jack stand (its taken by my FC right now) or else u can just come I can replace it for u. for 1/2 the cost. just wanna learn, oh well

OK, thanks for the info. No - if it does HAVE to be drained, I'll get new oil, no prob, I just wasnt sure that it had to be.

This sort of conflicts with this though:

I'll bring it to a full transmission shop that obviously has a lift and a level tranny stand so....technically...no?

At this point I'll probably jsutr bring those 2 quarts and have them change it anyway, i'm just curious. And I dont want them spilling some, and topping it up with some shitty oil!

Technically no... because if the transmission is kept level, no fluid will come out (I've done it before)... meaning you don't HAVE to...

But like nycgps mentioned... its always nice to start with fresh fluids.
Everytime I drop a transmission... thats honestly what I do.

And this is a very good reason why you should.

Ahh thanks, you two are awesome.

They're gonna charge 425 for labor. guess it's fair but... NYCGPS - seriously if it wasn't a "learning experience" (meaning you'd done it on a rx8 once or twice, i'd let you do it for sure for half that price. But every time I "learn something new" on my car it involves breaking something else lol so probably not a great idea

there is almost no chance of breaking anything when doing a tranny swap ... unless you go nutz about it/don't drop the tranny off 10 feet to the ground not possible anyway, as a car on Jack stand ... you have about 2 feets of space the most.

Im 1/2 way removing the engine away from the FC and I already stripped like 1/2 the stuff in the drivetrain off. just so you know that its not hard at all, taking my sweet time

425 don't sound that bad, just remember to tell them to REPLACE and GREASE the pilot bearing & seal properly. (most shops don't have a puller as small as our pilot bearing, show them your pilot bearing)

what are the chances that they will keep your transmission "level" ? lol

they always tilt it one way or another, even with a transmission jack I seen that crap happen, hell, one of my friend the garage actually drop his tranny on the floor and bent the shifter ... I got him a used one from a member here (forgot his name) lol
