Just Got My 1st RX8 Today, Have a Few Q's
Hey guys.
I just my first RX8 today, she is a 2004 model with 12000 on the clock with full service history she is very clean, However she is a RX8 5 Speed Manual NOT the Hi-Power one!
Correct me if i'm wrong, but the difference is around 40Kw right? around 50Bhp? Can someone tell me where that extra power comes from? also how can i gain that 50+bhp with out having to pay big $$$$ i was thinking something along the lines of, a nice air-filter "cone" with a exhaust and remove the Cat.
also if someone could please take the time out to explain the main differnce between my model and the hi power version aport from the extra bhp?
thanks guys i will post some pics soon! oh she is black

Welcome to the club.
The power difference is mostly due to the intake ports ... you have a 4 port vs the Hi Power 6 port.
Forced induction (Turbo, Supercharge, Nitrous) is the only way to gain that kind of horse power (maybe street porting)
Best advice .. search using google ... like this site:rx8club.com 4port vs 6port

I'm assuming you are in Europe due to the measurement units you are giving?
I actually know very little about the 5spd Manual. What is your redline? If it is lower than ~8800 then that is your difference right there.
Power = TQ x RPM / 5252, so a 7,200rpm automatic has roughly the same power curve as a 9,000 rpm 6spd manual, but since it stops 1,800 RPM earlier, the RPM doesn't keep multiplying that TQ into a higher power number. This is the reason for most of the power difference between high and low power. The rest of the reason is the variation of drivetrain power loss as different drivetrains will have difference loss rates.
Considering that you DO have the manual, and IF the power difference is simply the lower RPM limit, than you can probably make much of that back by increasing the RPM limit through the use of an AccessPORT. HOWEVER, I stress that if this is correct, they lowered the redline for a reason. Find out WHY before you go making changes blindly. The lower redline for the automatics is generally accepted to be due to transmission stress and transmission heat levels. Having the 5spd from the NC Miata may eliminate or remove this reason, but possibly not. You might also have a 4 port engine instead of a 6 port engine, and it simply won't be able to really use the higher RPMs anyway so they tuned low.
Regardless of the reason though, you won't gain ANY quick power with this car other than cat removal. It is very well tuned. A K&N air filter adds roughly 1whp. Maybe. Removing the cat is 7-10whp. Catback is 0. Intake is barely measurable gains or measureable losses over stock.
You can pour your heart and soul into this car for tiny gains.
