Justifying the cost of a new engine (reman Ren)
I have an 04 RX8, and I'm trying to decide if it makes sense to dump 5k to 6k into it for a new (remanufactured) Renesis engine from Mazda. That estimate includes installation and a 1yr/12k warranty.
I suppose I can spend the money on a new (different) RX8 with a known good engine with good compression numbers. But I have some money tied up in the car I have now -- in places besides the engine. Also, it's a good specimen with very little rust or body damage. Plus it's a Grand Touring model, so it's got some nice upgrades.
The engine I have is fine for now -- the compression numbers are marginal but it still performs well. So I'm just thinking ahead a little bit.
I'm also nervous about insurance, as I only carry liability on it at the moment. I might like to insure it for something close to what I've put into it, but I don't know if that's possible.
Thoughts? Thank you.

When undecided...in matters of the heart, use the mind, and vice versa. Sounds like you may need to do the same. 8 ownership, post warranty is a labor of love. Do you love it, the look, the ride, your personalized additions, etc.; or is this merely an economic consideration? If the former, install a new engine and enjoy it. If the latter, chart your transition to another make / model car.
If you choose to stay in an 8, I agree w/Loki, I'd sooner invest a "new" (reman) engine in my car, than buy an unknown.
All the best.

You'll need an engine for the core charge.
If your engine is 'marginal' you might consider holding onto it for rebuild/resale down the road.
I read some threads that lead me to believe the production of Mazda remans has ended.
I'm not sure, but I think once the existing engines are sold there aren't going to be anymore.
I drove mine for about 2 years with a known failing engine that I was aware of, it had no symptoms when I had it tested.
Idk how long it was bad.
